Description
Here’s a great item for Beatles, Beach Boys, and Kingston Trio fans. This is a rare 7-inch promotional cardboard record offered as “A Surprise Gift†to entice people to join the Capitol Records Club. The full title is “FREE RECORD – A Surprise Gift From The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and the Kingston Trio.â€
The record is 7†on heavy laminated paper/cardboard. On the reverse is advertising for the Capitol Record Club with Wanda Jackson and the Beach Boys prominently displayed. Given the content, I am certain it would date to either 1964 or 1965.
In searching the internet, I learned this item was produced by Evatone, Inc., and that Beatle collectors refer it as the "Kingston Trio Flexi" and that it came as a magazine insert.

I found this inside a “Platter Pak†of 45 rpm records from an estate sale. It is obvious that the original owner separated the record from the larger advertising sheet that contained photos of Record Club album selections and the ordering postcard, and presumably discarded them or used them to join the club. Drat!
Because it was stored inside the platter pak, it is in immaculate condition and plays great. I have included a sound clip of the announcer introducing the Beatles who then proceed to perform an abbreviated version of “Roll Over Beethoven,†the announcer then returns to deliver a spirited plug for the Record Club, and then he introduces the Beach Boys who perform a portion of their hit “Little Douce Coup-eh (sic)..†Due to storage space limitations I ended the sound clip at that point. Later on the record, you will hear the announcer return to introduce the Kingston Trio who perform a portion of “When the Saints Go Marching In.â€
