Description

*** Once upon a time, I worked in a museum. So I know quite a bit about collections stewardship and preservation. All rare Beatles records I will be listing on ebay over the next few weeks come from my personal, meticulously tended private collection maintained in quiet, light-controlled, climate controlled archival-type setting in a clean, pet-free, smoke-free home. ***

It is highly likely you won't see many other Beatles releases here on ebay as clean and impeccable as those I am currently offering. They all follow, strictly to the letter, the condition reports I prepare, and more – and they are all guaranteed to be just as nice as anything you will see offered by high profile sellers like Perry Cox and Parlogram. How do I know this? Because I bought my stuff from them, and have given all of it the white-glove treatment ever since.

And with a no-quibble return policy, you can’t go wrong. All you’ll be out is the shipping fees if you want to return an item. But – hear me now, believe me later – once you have this piece in your possession, you won’t want to return it.

See my other Beatles albums currently for sale here on ebay.

I still have an inventory of fantastically clean Beatles items to list. More first press, near-mint UK Parlophones, unplayed singles, some other sealed LPs, some sealed solo stuff, much more and … what are you looking for? Send me a message to find out how I might help you round out your Beatles record collection.

THE BEATLES – Magical Mystery Tour 1967 U.S. Capitol SMAL-2835
First Press STEREO LP FACTORY SEALED Time capsule copy!

Up for auction is an original, first-press 1967 Beatles Magical Mystery Tour U.S. Capitol LP in STEREO – still FACTORY SEALED, 51 years after it left the factory.

CONDITION REPORT

Photography caveat: In the first photo, there appear to be some "spots" on the front top third of the cover. Rest assured these "spots" are NOT on the cover itself, and are merely caused by reflection on the shrinkwrap.

Overall, the record is in exemplary condition for its age. There are no outward signs of mishandling or improper storage at any time in its long life.
The volume lays perfectly flat, and the text on the spine is nicely centered. Superb, heavy first edition and the spine has the "Capitol" logo instead of the "SMAL" prefix nearly all Capitol reissues have. All four corners are perfectly straight.
The factory shrinkwrap exhibits two "breathe holes" – both on the front, toward the left edge – one just over the word "The" in "The Fool On The Hill" and the other about 6.5 inches (?16.5 cm) exactly in line below, off in the background field of yellow and blue.
The shrinkwrap is still very tight all the way around, however there are three minor breaks in the shrinkwrap, as follows:
  • one extremely minor break approx. 1.5 inches (?3.8 cm) at the top left corner (front view)
  • one break also approx. 1.5 inches (?3.8 cm) at the right corner (front view)
  • one extremely minor break also approx. 1.5 inches (?3.8 cm) near the bottom left corner on the edge (front view)
In all instances listed above, the shrinkwrap is not peeling away, and in those spots the gatefold jacket is clean and unworn.
The bottom white perimeter on the front and back (between the edges and the cover slick) exhibit some very mild foxing. This is typical for a volume this old, and the foxing is almost negligible – it's mentioned only to be thorough in my description.
The lower edge has one razor-thin, insignificant ding, between the words "You" and "Need" in "All You Need Is Love." This is an extremely negligible flaw and, again, mentioned only in the interest of full disclosure.

Finally, I would mention a couple of minor factory wrinkles in edges of the front cover slick – one above the "a" in "Magical" and one above the "y" in "Mystery" – that extend from the slick edge downward approx. 1 inch (?2.5 cm). I'm certain these wrinkles have been there since the piece rolled off the Capitol assembly line, as it is so common to see this with the slick glued-on-board album construction of old. Not offensive at all.
All the flaws detailed above do not detract from the aesthetics and the beauty of this rare volume, so remarkable in this condition.
In addition:
  • No mold
  • No dirt
  • No funky smells
  • No warping
  • No ring wear
  • No edge wear
  • No seam splits
  • Not a reissue
  • Not a reseal
  • Not a counterfeit
The color booklet inside the gatefold is believed to still be attached to the center seam, and the record inside, guaranteed to be on the original black Capitol "Rainbow" label, is believed to be in at least high Near Mint condition, if not perfectly Mint.

I have done my best to provide an accurate description of this item at the time it was listed. Sometimes, a typographical error takes place, or a flaw detail may be inadvertently overlooked.
