Only a handful of Beatles' Record Club issues exist (about 5, we believe), and they are all perversely rare. Of the four or so titles, Something New is probably the second rarest. This is the stuff Beatles collectors’ wet dreams are made of.

***

If you are a European, be forewarned: this is a VERY different version of the album from the one you are used to hearing (actually, European version of this album does not even exist - European equivalent of this album would probably be "With the Beatles", the group's second UK album): American mixes of the Beatles albums are generally different, more "raw" and placing much more emphasis on echo and reverb (this one is no exception).

This is the second Beatles Capitol  album, and - like all American versions of Beatles albums - this one, too, is different from the British counterpart in name, number of the tracks, mixing and overall packaging.

***

The Beatles' Second Album was the first album of the group's work to be assembled by Capitol Records exclusively for the American market (as opposed to, say, Meet the Beatles!, which was a reconfigured and shortened version of With the Beatles). As such, it offends some historical purists, who don't think of it as a real album. Regardless of its origins, however, The Beatles' Second Album stands as probably best pure rock & roll album ever issued of the group's music. In the process of pulling songs from various British and American EPs, singles (including "She Loves You") and B-sides, as well as tracks left over from the editing of With the Beatles for American release, the compilers somehow managed to avoid any trace of the pop ballads favored by Paul McCartney that usually slowed down the group's other early albums, and the result was the longest uninterrupted body of hard rock & roll and R&B in their entire output. No other long-player by the group featured them doing more covers of songs by black American artists or songwriters, including Little Richard("Long Tall Sally"), Chuck Berry ("Roll Over Beethoven"), Smokey Robinson ("You Really Got a Hold on Me"), Barrett Strong ("Money"), and others, and just to show how rich a vein this all was at the time of its release, the version of "Roll Over Beethoven" here actually charted briefly as a single, while "Long Tall Sally" served as their concert finale.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Small water stain noted in one corner (less than 2 square inch in size)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel (a cover construction problem, typical for the Capitol's mid-60s covers)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents
