''The Beatles'' is the ninth official album by The Beatles, a double album released in 1968!!
It is most often referred to as '''The White Album'', as it has no text other than the band's name on its plain white sleeve, designed by pop artist Richard Hamilton. Originally planned to be titled A Doll's House, the album is often hailed as one of the major accomplishments in popular music!
With this album, each of the four band members began to showcase the range and depth of his individual songwriting talents and styles that would be carried over to their eventual solo careers.
For one thing, some Beatles began recording some of their songs individually, a heretofore unheard-of practice. For another, some songs that the individual Beatles were working on during this period eventually were released on solo albums (John Lennons "Jealous Guy"; Paul McCartney's "Junk" and "Teddy Boy"; George Harrison's "Not Guilty").
The album is also marked by experimentation with different musical genres!!
The album was recorded between 30 May 1968 and 14 October 1968, largely at Abbey Road Studios, with some sessions at Trident Studios!
Although productive, the sessions were sometimes fractious and exacerbated the growing tensions within the group. In the difficult seven months before the sessions, Brian Epstein died, and they had their first artistic and commercial failure in the Magical Mystery Tour television film, and a long trip to India to study Transcendental Meditation which ended in disillusionment for John Lennon!
Concurrent with the sessions, they were also in the midst of launching their new multimedia business corporation Apple Corps, which would lead to increased conflict within the group as the year progressed.
These sessions also marked the first appearance in the studio of Lennon's new girlfriend and artistic partner Yoko Ono, who would thereafter be a constant presence. Prior to Ono's appearance on the scene, the individual Beatles had been very insular during recording sessions!
Often McCartney would record in one studio while Lennon would record in another at the same time, using different engineers.
At one point in the sessions, George Martin, whose authority over the band in the studio had waned, spontaneously left on vacation, leaving Chris Thomas in charge of producing the sessions. The studio tensions carried over into the Beatles' subsequent album and film project in early 1969, ultimately released as Let It Be.
The Beatles' recording engineer Geoff Emerick quit during these sessions out of disgust!
These sessions also marked the change from 4-track to 8-trak recording, although in essence this had started in 1966 and 1967 with the technique of 'bouncing down' several tracks onto one, to free up new tracks for recording!!!.
While Abbey Road Studios had yet to install an 8-track machine that had supposedly been sitting in a storage room unpacked for months (evidently because EMI could not afford its power cord) the Beatles decided to out-source to the more updated Trident Studios!
Starr's temporary departure!
At one point during the recording sessions for the album, Starr suddenly walked out of the studio, feeling his role was minimized compared to that of the other members Lennon, McCartney and Harrison pleaded with Starr to return, and after two weeks he did. In Starr's absence, McCartney played drums on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Dear Prudence." Upon his return, he found his drum kit decorated with red, white and blue flowers, a welcome-back gesture from Harrison!

The vinyls
Visual inspection of both vinyls. Both lay perfectly flat on the turn table, and there are no warps.( Note I have double checked these for warping) These are the very early thicker and chunky slabs of vinyl only found like this on the earliest pressings! These are the original and not reissues. They have retained their original glossy sheen! It is obvious to me that all four sides have been played but not over played in my personal opinion, these vinyls are not your typically well or over played vinyls, they are in exceptional condition for 49 years old!
On visual inspection when looking at the playing surfaces on all four sides , there are some surface marks, mainly scuffs and sleeve removal type scratches only, importantly there are no deep feelable needle scratches that I can see at all! Only if scrutinised under a strong light can possibly any minute light whyspy marks/scuffs possibly be seen, but very importantly there are no marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops!
The Audio Quality
Please note! I have played all four sides track for track and I would class my self as highly criticle and have given my honest opinion on the quality of the audio (which I rate at the very top for vibrancy and feel only found like this on the earliest pressings) Points to note! I have many many original UK pressings of the white album collected over a period of 45 years! This original stereo produces a really deep bassey audio which believe me can not be surpassed on the later pressings! Many factors i have found contribute to this awesome sound, mainly the original thicker materials used and the fact that these are very (very) early stampers that make all the difference! Note, that side 2 carry ''1'' to "1" MOTHER STAMPERS (the very 1st from the given masters, would produce the cleanest and most vibrant audio quality on vinyl)! Can not be surpassed in my opinion! Note: I heard obvious background interference on the track "Julia" which is the last track side 2 in the form of a scuff background noise which is worth to mention. Visually I don't see any defects or signs of over play or groove ware and can only put this down to either it needs very deep cleaning method or a pressing error, not uncommon on early Beatles albums. Any other interferance an background noice heard was either in quieter places or in between some tracks but nothing consistant throughout the audio. All tracks are playable and very enjoyable in my personal opinion and play through without ant skips or jumps and no constant clicks or pops!
Points to note! I have played all four sides four times prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume! This album has been in my collection for at least 40 years and has been stored in a case with the vinyls separated from the sleeves and cover! This is how I have always stored my records!
Below I have given my honest opinion on the audio quality as I heard it! Please note! I follow (no) other codes or practices when describing or grading my records\vinyls other than my absolute honest opinion, and my grading in this instance is my opinion on the audio quality in comparison with the many many Beatles albums that I have heard and played in the past!. I would class myself as highly critical when it comes down to the audio quality and this was played four times at very loud volume on a top system prior to listing! Please look at my completed listings of records that I have listed of this caliber and you will see that I normally get it right!
Important note! It is my personal opinion that this album has not been overplayed, the audio is clear and vibrant throughout!
Side 1. Audio graded at least Excellent plus! Plays through cristal clear and vibrant through out (no) grooveware\(no) distortion or that this has been overplayed at all. In strong light, any tiny light whispy surface marks are (none) audio sounding that I heard that would cause any nasty annoying loud clicks or pops during the audio. Even between tracks and background noise is very quiet and minimal perhapes suface noise between some tracks only. Superbe awesome audio through out Just the lightest static crackle in isolated quiet places only, amaizingly, I recall nothing annoying during the play of the audio) This played through absolutely awesome throughout with (no) loud clicks or pops or background noise during the audio that i heard
side 2. graded at least excellent! Plays through cristal clear and vibrant through out! In strong light, any tiny light whispy surface marks are,, (none) audio sounding that I heard that would cause any nasty annoying, consistant loud clicks or pops during the audio. even between tracks and background noise is quiet/minimal superbe awesome audio This played through absolutely awesome throughout with (no) loud constant clicks or pops during the audio or background noise that i heard ! Note: As describe earlier I notice a background scuff noise/interfearance during the play of 'Julia' No visual defects in the grooves (could possibly need deep cleaning or a pressing fault)
side 3.graded at least excellent plus! Plays through crystal clear and vibrant (no) groove ware\(no) distortion or that this has been overplayed at all In fact the actual audio is awesome crystal clear and vibrant with real rich basey feel and absolutely superbe seperation! . In strong light any tiny surface marks\scuffs\scratches that could possibly be seen, cause no loud constant clicks or pops. superbe awesome top audio please allow for the odd light static that might possibly be heard during a couple of quieter tracks but nothing in my opinion that spoilt the overall awesome audio experience! This played through absolutely awesome throughout certainly no skips! Audio is very clear rated at the top!
side 4. graded at least excellent plus! Plays through cristal clear and vibrant (no) groove ware\ (no) distortion or that this has been overplayed at all In fact the actual audio is awesome cristal clear and vibrant with real rich bassey feel and absolutely superb separation! . In strong light any tiny surface marks\scuffs\scratches that could possibly be seen, cause no loud constant clicks or pops. superb awesome top audio please allow for the odd light static tick/crackle that might possibly be heard during a couple of quieter tracks or in between tracks but nothing in my opinion that spoilt the overall awesome audio experience! This played through absolutely awesome throughout certainly no skips! Audio is very clear rated at the top! Again, one of the best sounding copies that I have heard!

Audio summery!
All four sides were play tested by me four times prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system. Although visably there might be some surface scuffs/marks amazingly these have very minor\little if no effect as I heard it! I would grade the audio on all four sides, conservatively at least excellent to excellent plus (Some interferance as previously described) absolutely stunning throughout! One of the most vibrant and exhilarating Beatles White album that I have ever heard!
Please note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd static, Background scuff noise on one track, and perhapes very light isolated static crackle\ticks that may only be heard during quiet places \tracks only and (not) consistant throughout the audio! Please remember that these vinyls are genuine 49 years old and would have originally been played on a 49 year old system! All indications are that the vinyls have had only minimal play only in my opinion!
A constant clean before each play is highly recommended! These vinyls have been stored in a case laying dormant for over 45 years and dirt and dust in the grooves causes static. Cleaning before each play will reduce any static and will enhance the audio quality!
The labels
These feature the original (Dark Green) apple logos (only early press) ''Apple records .....'' featured around the label rim (only early press) also Mfd in UK. ''sold in the UK........'' is featured across all four of the labels (only 1st press)EMI is featured on all sides. Note: "K.T" tax code is stamped on side 4. (Correct for this early pressing) Spidering can be seen angled in strong light In my opinion these vinyls have definately been played but not overplayed in my opinion. Little if (no) spindle ware (the holes are perfectly round) Please note! Importantly these vinyl's have not been over played!
The Record Sleeves
These are the originals in superbe condition,, ''black'' Apple company sleeves Which have one only label die cut hole, cut out on each sleeve (only early press) both are in very fragile condition with very minor light general ware/creasings/rubbing with age. Amaizingly there are no edge splits or tares. there are light general creases and ware with age. note: A small tear at one of the die cut holes to mention. Both are original and becoming very fragile with age and are stored seperately from the vinyl and are the originals!
The Cover
This is the original ''Garrod and Lofthouse'' Gate fold (Top Opener) NUMBERED 0143732 This has been stored separated from the vinyls for protection for at least 45 years and has obviously protected this cover for all of this time from the usual vinyl indents and ringware! In truly superbe condition! SUPER SUPER GLOSSY IN APPEARANCE! There are (no) splits or tares! and amazingly no real nasty creases even rarer is that it is hard to see any nasty ring ware (very rare to find like this) Note: slight browning/yellowing at the edges , noticed if looked for. A very small water stain noted at the front top opening edge but again not really noticed unless looked for in my opinion. Light edge crease lines are noted at the edges and spine edges. The laminate is slightly flaking at the spine and only really noticed if looked for in my opinion. Light creases at the inside only worth to mention. This is graded at excellent in my opinion!
The poster
This is the original (two sided) poster. One side contains the full lyrics of this album. Light wear/light creases/very slight foxing with age only. This has never been put on a wall and totally original with the red lipstick mark (only original issues).
The Four Photos
Also these are the original colour photos of the four Beatles in superb condition! As New!
