Description
One of the holy grails of Beatles collecting, a first press copy of Please Please Me on the black and gold Parlophone label.
Only a first and second press appear on this style of label and you can spot the first press very easily as I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Do You Want To Know A Secret and There’s A Place all have the incorrect Dick James Mus. Co. publishing credit – this was corrected to Northern Songs from the second press onwards.
The matrix numbers are XEX 421-1N and XEX 422-1N and the mothers are 1 and 1 and the stampers are GR on side 1 and poss a T on side 2 ( I can't make it out).
The Ernest J Day sleeve is in good to very good condition for it’s age. There’s some laminate creasing on the front, all 4 corners are showing their age, especially top left on the rear, and someone’s name written very lightly on the rear (see pics). The spine is fully readable.
The record itself has obviously been played a lot in it's lifetime and comes with lots of marks as you’d expect but they are mostly light (apart from one on side 2). It plays through really well with no skips, sticks or jumps – there is crackle throughout but, apart from quieter moments and between tracks, the power of the music does a good job of masking it. I did notice some ticks here and there though they too weren't overpowering. The labels are free of any writing though side 1 is a lot feinter than side 2.
It comes with the original emitex inner sleeve (at least I think it's the original one - see pic) which is in very good condition. It has a small 1? tear on the fron and a small 2? split on one side.
Not the best copy you'll ever see but is a very good example of one of the rarer Beatles records
