This auction is for the extremely rare
9LP box set release of Beethoven Symphonies on the SAX turquoise / silver Columbia label, with the great Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. It's very hard to find in excellent condition (which this one is) so I recommend you bid early to avoid disappointment - it is truly an item to treasure. Please note that the start price is set at about half of previous eBay final sale prices.

Works on disc: The Nine Symphonies of Beethoven, plus overtures to Coriolan Op.62, The Creatures of Prometheus Op.43, King Stephen Op.117 and The Consecration of the House Op.124.
Performed by: Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Anse Nordmo Lovberg (soprano), Christa Ludwig (mezzo-soprano), Waldemar Kmentt (tenor) and Hans Hotter (baritone) are the soloists in the 9th Symphony, with the New Philharmonia Chorus (chorus master Wilhem Pitz). 
Record details: This item does not have a set number, but comprises the nine Columbia discs of the symphonies which were released singly with the following numbers:
SAX 2318: Symphonies 1 & 8
SAX 2331: Symphony No.2; Coriolan & Prometheus overtures
SAX 2364: Symphony No.3
SAX 2354: Symphony No.4: The Consecration of the House overture
SAX 2373: Symphony No.5; King Stephen overture
SAX 2260: Symphony No.6
SAX 2415: Symphony No.7
SAX 2276 & 2277: Symphony No.9
All are stereo 12" 33rpm LPs. Made in England. 
Condition of disc: These discs are in beautiful, glossy condition. However, after examining them in a raking light I can report that sides 2 of both the 2nd and 7th Symphonies have some very faint marks - not deep scratches - towards the end of each playing surface. I cannot imagine these affecting the playing quality adversely but better for me to be over-critical rather than not to mention this at all.
Condition of box: The box is very good, solid condition. It is finished in linen and stamped with gold lettering on the spine and front - in the photograph the darker parts of the lettering are where the gold has reflected due to the flash photograpy. The inner sleeves are in very good to excellent condition. The 28-page booklet is in near mint condition and contains photographs of the conductor, soloists and orchestra plus some fine uncredited monochrome illustrations of the composer. The text of Schiller's Ode to Joy is of course included. There is a foreword by the conductor, a note by his daughter Lotte Klemperer and extensive notes on each of the works by Ernest Newman. Inside the back cover is a list of recordings by Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonia Orchestra 'issued up to June 1962'.
