BEETHOVEN Sonatas FUCHS/BALSAM 5LP Box Decca '52 SIGNED

Decca Records, Gold Label Series, catalog number DX150, Beethoven, The Sonatas for Violin and Piano. This pressing is from 1952, I believe. Violin: Joseph Fuchs. Pianist is Artur Balsam. This is a five-LP box set containing the ten sonatas. It was issued as a limited edition of 2500 numbered copies; this is #917. Additionally this "autograph" edition has been signed by the artists. Fuchs' sig looks to have been done with a fountain pen and has faded a bit to light blue; it is still in great shape, though, no smears or damage. Balsam's sig is dark blue and looks like a ballpoint pen was used. Sigs and number are inside the cover of the box. There is a wonderful 50-page book included with complete scores and commentary. LPs are held in heavy paper sleeves attached to a dowel which is in turn attached to the bottom half of the box, still very solidly. Lower right corner of the box top is split and the paper hinge attaching top and bottom is broken, otherwise the package is in EX condition. LPs have the Decca gold and black labels, Microgroove, heavy vinyl. LPs are VG+, maybe better, with some light scratches and pops/clicks but there is barest or no surface noise at all on any of the sides. Exceptions: the second movement of Sonata #9, "Kreutzer," has several visible and audible dings. Sonata #8 has a visible and audible ding running from the end of the first movement to the beginning of the second. None cause either LP to skip.  Overall this is an excellent copy of a very rare set and of course the performances and music are fantastic. These have been and will be thoroughly cleaned a couple more times on a VPI machine. NOTE: THIS IS AN OVERSIZED AND VERY HEAVY 5-LP BOX SET WITH BOOK. POSTAGE WILL BE SIGNIFICANT.
