BEN WEBSTER with STRINGS

Since this album is sub-titled "Ben Webster With Strings," it is altogether reasonable to ask: Why should Ben Webster want to record with a string section? The answer, in Webster's own words: "Strings create a special atmosphere and this atmosphere makes me feel better and it makes me play my horn better, too. . . When I was a kid growing up around Kansas City I studied the violin. But I finally had to put it down 'cause I could never get the right sound that I was always after. So I turned to the saxophone for what I had to say musically. . .
"But the violin is a wonderful instrument. If a man plays the violin-well, nothing can be compared to it for sweetness and purity. There is no substitute. . . Here is what having strings around does for me, it really brings out my best feelings.
On this long play, Webster has the singular advantage of a topflight conductor and arranger in Ralph Burns. Since Webster's tenor saxophone was identified strongly for so long with Duke Ellington, it's understandable that one of the selections is from the Duke's pen-"What Am I Here For?" The others are "Early Autumn," a jazz milestone by Burns when it was first played by Woody Herman and on which Hank Jones contributes a particularly tasty piano solo here; "Willow Weep for Me," which likely will rate with the most memorable of Ben Webster's own solos, "My Greatest Mistake," "No Greater Love," "Teach Me Tonight," "Until Tonight," the late Carl Fischer's "We'll Be Together Again" and "Blue Moon."
The aforementioned Hank Jones, drummer Osie Johnson and Wendell Marshall, bassist, comprise the rhythm section. Members of the string and woodwind sections are: Violin: Leo Kruczek, Harold Colletta, Harry Lookofsky, Tosha Samarofj, Paul Winter, Eugene Orlofj, Martin Donegan, and Jack Zayde. Viola: Burt Fisch, Cello: Abram Borodkin, George Ricci and Lucien Schmit. Bass: Chf:!t Amsterdam. Baritone Sax and Flute: Danny Bank and Albert Epstein.
