Absolutely beautiful copy of the very rare original 1968 mono pressing of Big Brother’s classic Cheap Thrills LP on Columbia KCL-2900. Of course this is Janis Joplin at her pinnacle, featuring her famed version of Piece of My Heart. One of the greatest records to come out of that San Francisco ballroom/acid rock era, and one of the best rock records of all time, in my opinion, and many other people’s. It’s also one of the rarest mono records in rock music… 1968 was so so late for a major label like Columbia to make a mono version… but here it is, one of the last-ever rock mono albums in the US. Original 2-eye mono labels and “mono” on the top left of the cover. Has the rarer 1B/1B stampers. Those of you who are well familiar with the usual stereo version will be thrilled to hear this incredible mix. Really powerful and surprisingly different in many places. Magic. And this copy is incredible. The disc is very nearly mint and plays absolutely flawlessly and just gloriously. There are maybe a couple of the tiniest scuffs but barely. There are a couple of light marks created by the plastic sleeve it came in, but they are not in any way damage or wear and don’t have any affect on the sound. You can just see these little plastic streaks if you look carefully. Not any big deal at all. This is still an almost pristine copy. I have seen only a handful of mono copies in many years of collecting, and this is BY FAR the best copy I have ever seen. Really an incredible disc.
Of course it also comes in the famous Robert Crumb cover, and this one is in lovely shape as well. Unbelievable actually. A little edge wear and a couple of very light spots at the bottom edge but actually amazingly crisp and clean, with sharp corners and really not much evidence of use at all. A little tiny bit of age and signs of gentle handling but really clean. An unmatched copy. Near impossible to beat.
