This is easily the single most praised popular and critical cult favorite of the 70s: the much-sought Big Star's second - and according to Alex Chilton who still refuses to acknowledge their third album - the last real album released by the Big Star. Big Star, who were neighbors, contemporaries and label-mates (Ardent was a Stax subsidiary) to such Stax/Volt legends as Booker T. and the MG's, Carla and Rufus Thomas, or Albert King, created a lasting masterpiece of delicate - but none too frail - harmonies, twanging guitars, intricate chord changes and some real loud, intense R&R. A masterpiece of 70s power-pop, and a great album, if ever we met one. The album was pressed as the band was disintegrating, to minimal promotion and advertising, and nice copies are brutally hard to come by. This is one such rare opportunity. Track listing:O my soul - Life is white - Way out west - What's going ahn - You get what you deserve - Mod lang - Back of a car - Daisy Glaze - She's a mover - September Gurls (later covered by Beach Boys) - Morpha too - I'm in love with a girl.
For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, this album was voted one of top-100 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted in 1987 by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (►click here for the complete album listing)
The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some tiny, faint, barely visible writing on its back side (names of two band members reinforced with a blue ballpoint pen; phone number written along the opening, about ¼ x 4 inch in size)
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 5 (back side)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Tiny yellowish stain noted on back cover (less than ½ square inch in size)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No stamps
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
