NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS OJC-025 (RLP233)

In 1956, Bill Evans was virtually unknown (it would be more than a year before he first gained notice as part of the celebrated Miles Davis Sextet.) His initial album attracted little attention back then, but listening with hindsight it is easy to hear in these highly individual trio and solo treatments a clear prophecy of the rich inventiveness that so deeply influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and an entire generation of jazz pianists.

PLUS AS BONUSES The Bill Evans Trio Waltz For Debby LP OJC-210 (RLP-9399) DATED 1985 EDITION WHERE NO BAR CODE WAS EVER PLACED ON THIS VINYL LP JACKET FOR COLLECTORS - FACTORY SEALED

This is the second of two Riverside albums made up of selections recorded by the classic Bill Evans/Scott LaFaro/Paul Motian trio at their legendary live recording session of June 25, 1961. Although originally issued a half-year later than Sunday at the Village Vanguard, this was by no means an afterthought collection of lesser items: Evans and producer Orrin Keepnews had immediately recognized that there was more than enough material for two top-level records. The dozen chosen performances were subdivided to enable the first album released to feature LaFaro–who had died in an auto accident just ten days after recording. Thus, this second collection can fairly be said to present a more typical overview of this remarkable unit at work.

Features:
• Vinyl LP FROM 1985

Musicians:
Bill Evans, piano
Scott LaFaro, bass
Paul Motian, drums

Selections:
1. My Foolish Heart
2. Waltz for Debby (Take 2)
3. Detour Ahead (Take 2)
4. My Romance (Take 1)
5. Some Other Time
6. Milestones

Recorded June 25, 1961 in New York.

PLUS THE FREE BONUS OF AN OPEN ONCE PLAYED COPY OF Bill Evans Everybody Digs Bill Evans LP

The legend of Bill Evans really begins with this album, his second. The pianist had just spent most of 1958 as part of one of the major units in jazz history: the Miles Davis Sextet that also featured John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. His fellow musicians already knew his worth (the album title was almost literally accurate, and the four endorsements on the cover, which embarrassed Bill, could easily have been greatly multiplied); with this record, the jazz public began to follow their lead. Aided by Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, Evans set down some of his most swinging trio sides, but the session would be memorable if it had only yielded the remarkable and haunting solo improvisation called “Peace Piece.”

Features:
• 1983 ISSUE Vinyl LP

Musicians:
Bill Evans, piano
Sam Jones, bass
"Philly" Joe Jones, drums

Selections:
1. Minority
2. Young and Foolish
3. Lucky To Be Me
4. Night and Day
5. Epilogue
5. Tenderly
6. Peace Piece
7. What Is There to Say?
8. Oleo
9. Epilogue

Recorded December 15, 1958 in New York
