Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Records this age are seldom seen better than this.

Brief Info: Born Eleanora Fagan, better known to the world of jazz music as Billie Holiday – she is recognised as one of the most important and influential jazz and popular music singers of all time. Her vocal style and phrasing was pioneering within this field of music. Her musical partner, Lester Young gave her the nickname ‘Lady Day’. This album includes some of her classics and was first issued in 1962. A beautiful Stateside UK pressing in the most fabulous condition – it gives a great insight into the Holiday sound and includes one of her most famous songs ‘Strange Fruit’. A harrowing poem set to song about racism and lynchings that occured in pre-war America.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): but the original owner wrote some neat dates on the back to identify the period of the two bands on the songs. Jazz connoisseurs wanted to know things that were not always stated on the cover and my grading of this otherwise near perfect cover does not allow for this small written text that is very neat. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on the rear on three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day (very appropriate for this one). The spine pair have the traditional angle-cut ends.

Lamination & Front: The front is simply as close to flawless as any cover this great age ever will be – this looks absolutely stunning. The laminate has fantastic shine, clarity and freshness and it could have almost been made yesterday. Nigh-on total adhesion and even under light, no dulling or record impression. This made in the era of absolute quality: thick card and robust construction, there is barely a crease worthy of the word to be seen. The incredible graphic of one of jazz’s most famous characters will never be seen better – a cover of connoisseur quality.

Cover Back: Totally unaged and looking magnificent – the only issue are five dates neatly written near the song titles by the original owner – clearly a discerning fan who needed to identify eras of the two separate bands featured on this album. The thinner style ‘Day’ flipbacks are immaculate and even their precise angled-cut ends are pristine. A cover so clean and fresh, it almost takes you back to the 60s and the shop that first sold them. A fabulous piece in every respect.

Top Edge: Unworn and remaining almost straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear at all, guaranteed untrimmed, these edges reitterate to the lack of usage of the record inside.

Spine and Text: Practically as made: Solid, straight, uncompressed, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Any minuscule surface crinkle is purely natural.

Corners: All immaculate again, as crisp and sharp as when made.

Cover Summary: A superlative classy all-round example of this vintage cover, one that will prove near impossible to find better – the neat writing on the back is the only issue for the most discerning connoisseur collector. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT: this record came to me inside an EMI ‘MFP’ unlined inner that looks practically like new. I cannot state if this is original or not, but as all others from this collection had original inners, I doubt this little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface marks tiny, few, ultra light and faint. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautifully preserved record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high but being a more ‘historic’ recording, that reflects in the sound of the period. So any audio blemishes to the vocals are purely natural and within the recording – this record sounds practically as it was issued. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immenselyd difficult to near impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended. An indispensable piece for fans of this legendary singer and a great introduction for any potential future ones still to discover her unique sound, style and class.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
