Description

Stunning Original 1970 UK Vertigo Swirl 1st Pressing 'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath! With Rare Warning Text and Original Swirl Inner Sleeve!!! And Here's The Kicker...It is in Impossible Mint-/Mint- Condition Throughout!!!

March 1970 saw a landmark in modern rock music; heavy metal was invented, and this is the album that did it, the then Unknown Brummie band 'Black Sabbath' hit the top 10 running with this, their debut. Up until that point Sabbath had just a very localised live fanbase around the Birmingham area, and the Vertigo label (owned by Phillips) were completely unprepared and overwhelmed by the success of this groundbreaking album. As a result of this, demand completely outstripped supply and the tiny initial batch of 1st pressings were snapped up immediately. Of this 1st batch, virtually none have survived unscathed today, most are gouged scratched and unplayable and have trashed sleeves and missing swirl inners ... and then there is this one... it is the most beautiful copy of this very rare UK 1st press I have ever seen...

You are bidding on an absolutely pristine original UK Vertigo Records 1970 1st Pressing of the Legendary Debut LP by Black Sabbath!!! It is the 1970 UK 1st PRESSING on the Vertigo Spiral Label and rare gatefold sleeve with 'Warning' text!!! It is in Impossible Mint- condition throughout-It even comes complete with its Mint- original poly-lined vertigo swirl inner sleeve!! The cool 1970's thick & chunky vinyl is in visually and aurally stunning condition and shines with a 'just pressed' look and feel, it really looks as if this record came off the press yesterday!!! You will NOT  find another UK 1st press Vertigo vinyl copy of this great LP in such amazing condition!!! Whether you are a fan looking for the best pressing out there or just looking for a sound investment, the value of this record will just rise and rise. These LP's simply do not turn up in this condition anymore!!!

Where do I start with this one, this is a very, very special record and looking at it now I am just wondering how I can do it justice just with text and images. To begin with, the vinyl is in stunning Mint- condition. It has only ever been played only once or twice in its 35 years!  It retains all of its factory-pressed shine & lustre and looks as if it was made yesterday! The vinyl easily grades as Mint-, it is the best pressing I have ever seen of this album! The 'Swirl' Centre labels themselves are in superb Mint- condition, perfect with no lifting, rubbing, tears, Scribbles and no unwanted writing of any kind. There are some spindle lines, but these can only be seen when holding the label angled under strong light. The gramophone rims containing the all-important Matrix, and Mother Stampers are Mint.

Now we get to the Classic 'Woman by The Lake' Gatefold Sleeve. The crispness and vibrancy of this sleeve is astounding, it really took my breath away when I saw it for the 1st time, the colours have retained all their vibrancy, sharpness and depth. I have never even seen another 1st press sleeve approaching this one, whoever wins this record will fall in love with this sleeve instantly, it was a difficult decision for me to sell this record as soon as I saw it. The colours are in fact so sharp, deep and clear, that I can see things I'd never noticed about the cover before, such as the intended greenish tinge to the woman's skin, father than the faded yellow that every other sleeve I have ever seen has.

It would be a massive understatement to say that these sleeves did not age well, virtually every one I have encountered in the last 10 years has huge flaws. This was due in part to the fact that they were un-laminated, when you add to this the unique kind of parties that I'm sure only 1970's UK Black Sabbath fans were capable of throwing (think spilt beer cans on album sleeves, records frisbee'd onto turntables [and very bad mullets!] and you're getting there) it is no surprise that is so hard to find a playable 1st press. This one however, is absolutely beautiful, and like the vinyl is closer to Mint than I ever thought I would see for a 'Black Sabbath' Vertigo 1st press sleeve. There are NO Tears, NO Scribbles and NO unwanted writing of any kind!!!  I really cannot find anything wrong with this sleeve. The gatefold folds out perfectly with NO creasing!!! The sleeve lies perfectly FLAT with NO Ring Wear and a good strong Mint spine, with Mint legible spine text!!! There is virtually NO corner wear and NO edge wear!! Now the grading part, and as you'd expect from that description, it is, of course Mint-!!!! It comes with its ORIGINAL Vertigo Swirl Poly-lined Inner Sleeve, which is crisp clean, flat, crease-free and unlike so many of these inners, still firmly attached to its poly inner! It is a stunning original Vertigo swirl inner sleeve to match this very special record. I don't often say it, but I will be very sad to see this album go, good luck!

To recap: When this LP was released it was pressed in tiny quantities, as Black Sabbath were, at that point, unknown UK wannabies. However as we all know, they went on to define their own particular brand of fuzzed out heavy metal which in turn pretty much defined the whole genre. This is thus the LP every fan of classic rock/metal wants in their collection, and is by far the hardest of all the Black Sabbath LPs to get hold of as a Mint- 1st press. As such the very first 1970 UK Vertigo Swirl Press is in very high demand today.  Do not settle for a tatty copy or a later NEMS repressing, this may be your only chance to get your hands in a MINT- Black Sabbath Vertigo UK 1st press, don't miss it! An absolutely essential (and massively rare) record to own!!!

This particular record will be shipped via our usual safe methods (see below), but will also come with a tough outer PVC sleeve added for extra protection during transit... Insurance is recommended for this record.

About Reef_77...

Feedback from our many regular customers suggests that buying Rare Vinyl on eBay is becoming increasingly risky; with inaccurate grading, poor packaging & deceit becoming more & more common.  Unlike some excitable eBay record sellers, we do not 'SHOUT!!!!!!!!' the description at you, telling you how "STUNNINGLY MEGA RARE!!!!!" a record is (when in fact it is usually fairly common). Nor do we do not try to give you our life story with each listing, thus taking up your whole evening reading just one description, (and ours writing it!). And we are certainly not one of the increasing number eBay chancers, trying their hand at dealing in rare records, labelling whatever old junk they have as a mega rare 1st pressings, and having no knowledge of how to grade, handle & package a record.

We are a trusted eBay Powerseller, and have been selling quality vinyl on eBay now for the best part of 4 years. We have amassed over 1,270+ individual positive feedbacks (plus another 500+ repeat customer positive feedbacks) and counting, and have a 99.8% feedback rating. We have not achieved this by selling sub-standard records.

What you get from Reef_77 is a straight forward honest description of the record you are interested in, along with any other information worth noting regarding the rarity etc. of the pressing. We are not bulk listers, who never have time to answer questions and offer only poor quality records. We believe in quality over quantity every time, and use our vast knowledge to select only the rarest and most pristine records to offer you each week. Each record is packed with the utmost care using the latest and strongest purpose-designed packaging available.  We are not some faceless eBay business, and are always friendly and approachable should you have any specific questions or wants. We just aim to cut out all the hyperbole, deceit and amateurism surrounding buying rare vinyl on eBay to make your rare record hunting as safe and enjoyable as possible. Enjoy.

Good Luck!   The UK Record Collector Grading System NAME GRADE INFORMATION Mint M Vinyl has just left the vinyl pressing machine and does not have any manufacturing flaws. It has never been handled and never played. Unless you work at the record plant, there is no such thing as mint! Record sleeves just left the pressing machine that made the sleeve. It has never been handled and a record has not been placed inside it which would deform it. Unless you work at the record plant, there is no such thing as mint! Near Mint NM Vinyl is virtually perfect. At most, perhaps a light scuff appears on the record. It should play without any noise or skips of any kind whatsoever. Record sleeve should look close to perfect with only minor signs of wear. The artwork should have no marks of any kind and there should be no "ring wear" (that is, the outline of the record inside should not show through the sleeve). Excellent EX or VG++ Vinyl should play with no skips of any kind. It should sound better than it looks. Often "Excellent" or "VG++" is a conservative version of "Near Mint." Perhaps some very minor surface scuffs, but again no effect on sound quality. Record sleeve might have some minor "ring wear" but otherwise the artwork should be unaffected. There should be no "ink wear" to the artwork. That is areas where the ink has worn down to the paper underneath. Perhaps some minor creases in the corners but no splits in the seams. Very Good Plus VG+ Vinyl will show wear including surface scuffs and some light scratches. Often, minor scuffs will be caused by the inner sleeve rubbing against the vinyl. If held up to a bright light, you will often see many tiny lines on the vinyl. Perhaps a few minor clicks or pops can be heard, but no deep scratches. Record sleeve should be clean, but slightly more aged. Perhaps some very small writing on the sleeve. The corners may be slightly bent, but not broken. There may be wear to the seams but not tears or holes popping through. Very Good VG Vinyl doesn't necessarily look good, but still plays well. Surface noise will probably be present including pops and clicks. At good volume levels, the music should overpower any pops and clicks present. Flaws should only be heard between tracks or on low volume passages. Record sleeve will look warn and used. There may be seam splitting, but not complete separation of the sleeve panels from each other. There will be noticeable ring wear on the cover, but most of the cover should still be in good condition. Good VG-/G+/G Vinyl looks well played, dull, and possibly not well taken care of. However, the record should still play without skipping. It will have substantial surface noise, pops and clicks. Loss of various parts of the dynamic range will occur due to worn grooves. This grade depends a lot on the owner and the type of record. A rock record may still sound "good" at high volume whereas a slower styles of music will sound terrible. Record sleeve may have many problems including seam splits, writing, taped repairs. However some of the artwork will still be visible. There can't be large tears and gouges in the cover. Fair/Poor F/P Doesn't meet the lowest standards for "good". At this point, the vinyl is difficult to listen to. The only reason to keep it would be due to extreme rarity or to fill a good sleeve until a better copy of the vinyl comes along. Doesn't meet the lowest standards for "good". The sleeve is torn, bent, and shows a very high level of wear. Attempts to tape the sleeve have made it worse. The only reason to keep the sleeve would be due to extreme rarity or to protect a good copy of the vinyl until a better sleeve comes along.
