Description
Black Sabbath’s eponymous, classic first album on the original Vertigo swirl label. Catalogue number VO 6 847 903 VTY. Matrices are VO6 1Y * 1 / VO6 2Y * 1. From the ominous intro of the tolling bell, falling rain and distant thunder this is the album that defined ‘Heavy Rock’, and later would ignite the whole ‘Metal’ genre. This FIRST UK PRESSING still sounds fantastic today !! Tony Iommi’s detuned, sledgehammer guitar riffs and Ozzy’s doom laden vocals dominate proceedings and announce Sabbath as the undoubted Masters of their Dark Art ! The vinyl has some marks but still has a glossy sheen and the labels are clean. The white label has the large swirl (later pressings have a smaller swirl with the vertigo text underneath). There is some surface noise apparent in a few of the quieter passages and some clicks in track 1, but the audio quality is still very clear and powerful. Much more so than on the later pressings and weak sounding re-issues. This FIRST UK PRESSING still sounds absolutely HUGE and VERY HEAVY !! Even by todays multitracked standards ! I would grade the vinyl VG. The Sleeve has a little wear to the bottom and corners and is free from any tears or splits. I would grade this as VG+. All in all, a good example of this classic and seminal album.
