BLACK SABBATH - ULTRA RARE FIRST UK SINGLE - EVIL WOMAN - FONTANA:
This is your chance to bid on this awesome rarity by the Heavy Metal legends BLACK SABBATH. Sabbath were formed in Aston Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward. They aimed to form a heavy blues band & soon enlisted bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who had played together in a band called Rare Breed. Originally named The Polka Tulk Blues Band (after a cheap brand of talcum powder) and also featured slide guitarist Jimmy Phillips and saxophonist Alan "Aker" Clarke. After shortening the name to Polka Tulk, the band changed their name to Earth and continued as a four-piece without Phillips and Clarke. While playing shows in England in 1969, the band discovered they were being mistaken for another English group named Earth, and decided to change their name again. A movie theatre across the street from the band's rehearsal room was showing the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath were signed to Philips Records in December 1969, and released their first single, "EVIL WOMAN", through Philips subsidiary Fontana Records in January 1970. This then is the historical single that you can now bid on here. As Sabbath's first release it is an incredibly collectable record and in mint condition is valued at £100. The classic FONTANA label states that this is a MONO release, probably Sabbath's only release in this format. The record features the following tracks: EVIL WOMAN c/w WICKED WORLD VINYL: The vinyl is in good / very good condition. I will not disguise the fact that there are some scratches and marks on the vinyl. The A Side is very good & plays well with the expected pops & clicks of a record that is 40 years old. The B Side has some heavy scratches which do cause a couple of jumps & sticking on my Sony PS-J20 record player (which has a very light arm). Philips/ Fontana were one of the few UK companies pressing singles with a large centre hole in 1970 & the adaptor shown is precisely the right one for this single. LABELS: The A Side label is in very good condition, however there is a small silver star (the type that your teacher used to stick in your school books for good work...possibly!) next to the title (see photos). B Side label is also very good but there is a mark near the catalogue number and the "Essex Music" wording on the left hand side. SLEEVE: This single is supplied in a Fontana company sleeve. Although the condition of the vinyl does leave something to be desired this is a HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ITEM - a real piece of ROCK HISTORY and a real treasure for OZZY / SABBATH & ROCK FANS alike.
