Label Conditions: Both look impressive: very clean and fresh with only very light and light, fine and faint spindle marks. The full swirl on side one looks fantastic with no chipping or blemishes worthy of mention from rim to hole. Just the odd ultra faint and tiny tone spot trace on two and the more difficult white area still just that, white with few blemishes again. (Please see label scans for all information needed).

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderate but fast getting harder to find (like most Spirals to be honest). This reached number one in the UK, a very rare occurrence for any album on this label and it prove the biggest selling Spiral album of all. Finding decent copies with an attractive cover is a different matter however, this album often played into submission in many cases and the cover is very hard to find with little wear, especially the standard non-laminated version. But this copy has the laminated sleeve which always gives a better and classier finish as only laminate really can.

Brief Artist & Album Info: For me the definitive heavy metal band of all time - this is how heavy music should sound - heavy, loud and doomy, with menace and power with vocals from the legend in his own lifetime – Ozzy Osbourne. A band, derided and unliked by the critics when they first appeared, the fans gave the finger and bought their albums anyway and rightly so. How times change, with Oz now a cult hero to millions and the band still around and as popular as ever – even recently topping the album charts for the first time since this classic issue. From the opening seconds of ‘War Pigs’ with Geezer’s grinding bassline and sirens wailing to the manic vocal on ‘Iron Man’, you know this is The Sabbs at their awesome best. The murderous riff on which the title track hinges sets the tone for this bruising album. Doom, war, death and destruction were Black Sabbath’s staple diet, which they devour with numbing intensity. Repetition is at the heart of the album, sustained chords and heavy bass often slowing tempos to crawling pace until, on ‘War Pigs’, they groan with suffocation. Guitarist Tony Iommi complements the sound with blistering lengthy solos, leaving Ozzy to inject his sinister cockiness. Others have often tried to grasp their crown, but Paranoid shows that Black Sabbath remain the best ever heavy metal band. This copy on offer is a strong one with a very clean record that has minimal surface sound and just a half-a-dozen clicks from a tiny mark that was even difficult to locate – little else. Many disappoint, even ones that appear lightly played, often rife with considerable surface noise and distortions especially on ‘Hand of Doom’ and the subdued ‘Planet Caravan’. This heavy-pressed early copy has the two joining grooves on side two and is heavily pressed with far above average weight. The laminated cover always looks better than the matt as the intense black is seen to fuller advantage and, of course, the surfaces are better protected against ring wear and rubbing. Although the most successful of the spirals, this is fast disappearing with the large format labels getting increasingly difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and probably worthy of a (+). A gatefold format with the outer faces laminated. The inside is matt finished with the laminate ends on the top edges. This has the VO Price Code in a box on the back, top right. The inner WARNING has ‘Copyright subsists in all recordings issued under this label’ text. Printed in Great Britain.

Laminate – Front & Back: The laminated covers for me, always look better than those without it. It retains a fine shine and freshness with no lifting and very fine clarity. Some dulling is seen, mostly on the back under light along with a few gentle surface marks and the odd light crease which are mostly confined to the edges – these few will ever escape. Near the front top left, a faint old price sticker outline is seen, but no residue at all. Most of any blemishes are seen little, if at all, with normal viewing. The laminate makes the richness of the black graphic appear much darker which adds more pizzazz to the finish.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside bar the laminate end shrinkage which always will appear as a darkened strip. Over time, laminate contracts, so the ends are now a little higher than when first made, but the tack will remain as it moves upwards, there is pretty much nothing to stop that occurring and most will have it.

Top & Bottom Edges: All very smooth, straight and practically unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge which tucked and folded, this neat and with little wear at all. The back entrance is mainly crisp and sharp with minimal traces of burring or thickening, this untrimmed and practically flush to the front which always makes any gatefold cover appear neater.

Spine and Text: The spine is in super shape also and with hardly any traces of wear, the lamiante solid and unpeeled which is not always the case. Very straight, uncompressed and folded square so the edges remain parallel. All text is perfect and unworn in deep red as seen on my close-up. Just a little rubbing to the very ends.

Corners: The odd tiny tip laminate peel (and I do mean tiny). Any rubbing only quite small and very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong and attractive all-round example of this more attractive laminated early 70’s cover, one that could prove hard to find much better. This should please many Black Sabbath fans.

The Spiral Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical. Only gently aged with minimal real wear at all. The odd tiny tone spot or so, barely any creasing and two crisp, neat window circles where the lovely clear lining can be seen. No edge splits or repairs, a very nice example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: an attractive visual copy with mostly ultra fine, whispy surface traces seen under bright angled light. The finest possible hairlines that have no effect on the sound, these often caused by caring collectors who lightly dry-cloth cleaned their records to remove dust. However soft these specialist cloths, it’s the surface debris that caused these ultra-fine surface blemishes. A clean record with fine shine, jet black and very solidly pressed record. A copy clearly played a few times but generally, with care. One tiny mark on side one emits half-a-dozen clicks but little with any more noticeable surface marks few and still light. Visually a splendid record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This increasingly scarce large swirl record plays up to and mostly beyond it’s visual grading with little to fault. I have mentioned around six clicks from a tiny mark that was not even easy to find. Any surface sound gentle, very infreuent and faint and this record delivers punchy, exciting sound without pressing flaws or any tracking issues. Even those two more critical quiet songs play well with little nothing unwanted bar the aforementioned brief clicks. The sound is strong with no distortion, all frequencies are sharp and clear but with a slightly muted production on some songs, the title track the most apparent with a murky bass-heavy mix that is totally correct and well-known. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played generally carefully and fairly modestly and has been well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic Black Sabbath album, still many fans favourite – yes the odd polite reminder you are listening to the real thing, a vintage large spiral pressing rather than a squeaky clean digital format. But nothing beats vinyl for heavy rock with all the punch and deep bass you need from such a band and recording. Not for the perfectionist, but this copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and still merits high recommendation – oh Lord yeah!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
