Label/Format/Info: WWA with matt, lightly textured surfaces. This is a very first issue which vary from second and subsequent pressings. The WWA logo is silver grey, later ones are white. Also this only carries the WWA 005 number, with NO references to ACB 00166, again these are later. First issue records are harder to find than later ones.

Label Conditions: There are very few spindle marks and the record plays impressively. The label surfaces have aged with some patchy dulling.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: There are at least two distinctly different pressings on WWA, this original being harder to find. Later issues were pressed on NEMS. Never easy to find in better conditions, the main cover highly prone to all forms of wear. The inner sleeve is made with much thinner paper for originals which is textured, this again very hard to find without splits and tears and few escape often heavy creasing. This a fine all-round genuine original copy.

Brief Info: The brilliant fifth album from the masters of metal gloom and the album that really got them noticed by the masses. Slightly more commercial and more accessible for many rock fans, this album really took the band into the heavy-rock super-league and boosted sales of the earlier Vertigo albums. With more use of varied instruments, the songs are still dark but not as doomy and bleak as previous. The instrumental ‘Fluff’ is a beautiful delicate piece with Iommi switching his heavy guitar riffs to a more sensitive acoustic guitar and uncharacteristic harpsichord. Ozzy again in tremendous form and the title track has long become a rock classic. First issues are becoming as elusive as the Spirals. This a fine example, the cover very nice and lacking the usual heavy wear many seem to acquire. The fragile inner a little aged but unusually fully intact, and the record playing very well. Always great to hear a nice original copy of this rock classic.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a dink on the top left corner tip stops a higher grading. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, fairly smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howards Printers (some were uncredited). Includes the original textured, thin paper lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The top left corner has a rub and moderate (but not large) dink, that apart, the front surface is impressive and lacking the usual heavy rubbing many seem to get. Still clean and fresh with hardly any other creasing at all, the lack of sticker issues is another plus.

Cover Back: Little to fault bar the odd trace of set off or minor grubbiness near the edges. This has hardly any creasing at all. So many of these suffer heavy grubbiness and ageing which this has avoided.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very nice indeed with little to fault as-seen.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with any rubbing little, very patchy and light.

Bottom Edges: As above and hardly rubbed at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge with little wear again. Both entrance edges are crisp and sharp with hardly any thickening.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite wide and straight with minimal compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn and the white surface quite clean and above average.

Corners: All apart from the top left have minimal tip rubbing and retain better than excellent shape. As mentioned already, the top left (front only), has a moderate dink and tip rub.

Cover Summary: The dink apart, a very strong all-round example of this wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could still prove difficult to find much better. This item should please many collectors, but not for purists who only want near perfection which is very hard to achieve on this one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): moderately darkened with age with a little creasing here and there. An original unlined lyric inner made with very thin paper, so this remaining naturally and fully intact is quite unusual. This has the PATENT Nos 1,125,555 and other detail overprint on the back side lower down.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): or thereabouts. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. One small mark shows more but does nothing, no deep penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a nice looking record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This hard rock classic plays above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and overall, a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and still offers impressive sound, even the critical and challenging instrumental ‘Fluff’. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this fine early record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be firmly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
