Review – Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi – Seventh Star
Released 1986 | Warner Bros. Records
⭐️⭐️⭐️☆½
Seventh Star is one of the most misunderstood entries in the Black Sabbath discography—and with good reason. Originally intended as Tony Iommi’s first solo album, the record was rebranded by the label as a “Black Sabbath” release at the last minute. The result? A record that sounds quite unlike anything else in the band’s catalog—more melodic hard rock than traditional doom-laden Sabbath. Still, judged on its own terms, Seventh Star is a bold, intriguing, and often underrated chapter in the Sabbath saga. ⚡🔥
Fronted by the legendary Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) on vocals, the album leans heavily into bluesy, soulful territory. Tracks like “No Stranger to Love” and “In for the Kill” showcase Hughes’ powerful range, with Iommi delivering sleek, expressive guitar work that trades sludgy riffs for a more polished, melodic approach. 🎤🎸
“Danger Zone” and “Turn to Stone” offer punchy, straight-ahead hard rock, while the atmospheric title track, “Seventh Star”, recalls the more epic, mystical side of Iommi’s songwriting. The production, though very ‘80s in its gloss, doesn’t overpower the playing—it’s clear this was a personal project for Iommi, and that intimacy comes through. 🌌🖤
However, the album suffers from its identity crisis. Longtime Sabbath fans expecting something in the vein of Sabotage or Mob Rules may find the sound jarring. But if approached with an open mind, Seventh Star is full of depth, strong performances, and standout moments. It’s not classic Sabbath—but it is a fascinating Iommi-led hard rock album with soul.
Conclusion:
A misunderstood gem that deserves reappraisal. Seventh Star may not follow the Sabbath blueprint, but it proves Tony Iommi’s versatility as a songwriter and guitarist. Come for the riffs, stay for Glenn Hughes’ incredible voice.
