Description
Released in 1960 this Decca 10"LP (WAL1011) features the irresistible rhythm of West African Highlife music by one of the best outfits to come out of Africa - The Blackbeats Band, led by the legendary King Bruce.
Bruce learned to play trumpet while studying in England, on his return to Ghana he played with several local bands before forming Blackbeats in 1952. He knew the sound he was looking for. "We were all enamoured with jazz, swing, and musc with a beat," he wrote, "So we were all interested in playing good dance music, but keen on giving everything a recognisable African beat". In contrast with most other Ghanaian bands, The Blackbeats gave more emphasis to their vocalists, influenced by the Louis Jourdan jump jive style. The fusion of musical styles into the typically African Highlife form was a big hit and King Bruce and his Blackbeats Band have become African musical legends.
This rare album is in excellent condition.
