Format

Der Pianist Horace Parlan hatte Ende der 1950er Jahre durch Aufnahmen mit Charles Mingus’ Workshop-Band (»Mingus Ah Um« und »Blues & Roots«) Bekanntheit erlangt. 1960 begann er eine kurze, aber sehr produktive Liaison mit Blue Note Records. In nur 16 Monaten spielte er für das Label sechs Hardbop-Klassiker ein. Als besonderes Juwel gilt »Speakin’ My Piece«, aufgenommen im Juli 1960 mit dem Tenorsaxofonisten Stanley Turrentine und dessen Bruder Tommy Turrentine an der Trompete, Bassist George Tucker und Schlagzeuger Al Harewood.

Pianist Horace Parlan had gained notoriety in the late 1950s through recordings with Charles Mingus' Workshop Band ("Mingus Ah Um" and "Blues & Roots"). in 1960, he began a brief but highly productive liaison with Blue Note Records. In just 16 months, he recorded six hardbop classics for the label. A special gem is "Speakin' My Piece," recorded in July 1960 with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and his brother Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood.
