Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few very light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Evidence suggests this scarce mono record has been played little.

Up and Down Movement: Barely a trace. Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable.

Rarity: Mono copies are scarce, a very late mono album issued when the mode was in major decline with few new titles issued. No mono copies were issued in America and this was the final UK album issued in this mode. This copy also includes a very rare vintage black and white promotional poster which is near impossible to find. I have never seen another anywhere.

Brief Info: The ninth Bob Dylan that briefly topped the UK album charts. It marked a change of direction from folk to a more country sound. It includes a cameo duet on ‘Girl from North Country’ with Johnny Cash. A really lovely album and this impressive UK mono original does it strong justice. The final original Bob Dylan album in the mono mode and only issued in America in stereo. Those who still chose the mono format in 1969 – a time when the mono format was in major decline – most did so to play on mono record players, and few will survive in much cleaner or better condition these days. The inclusion of the quite large black and white poster which is unmounted was almost a shock to find inside, I have never seen this poster before and a superb item that adds even more history to this legendary late 1960s album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still, this 50-year-old cover with no references to ‘stereo’ at all, and printed by a more obscure manufacturer (details below), will rarely be seen much better. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Quality Stationery Limited (London), includes the vintage orange CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An iconic piece of late 1960s artwork with Dylan looking very happy with his new country look. This superb front does it fantastic justice, the laminate retains beautiful shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of dulling, lifting or marks. A fine laminate crease on the left edge towards the bottom, any others ultra fine and faint on the edges that show little. The famed graphic retains lovely depth of colour and defies its considerable age. A front that simply exudes class.

Cover Back: Superb again with little to fault. The only scant hint of age is a fine darkened line on the very laminate end that few cover of this age can hope to avoid totally. A hint of discolouration of the matt card near the very edges but little else. The lack of rubbing, and especially ugly ring wear is a massive plus.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both quite straight, smoothly and fully laminated with hardly a trace of any wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still sharp with hardly any traces of thickening. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, reasonably straight with any compression or bowing light. The text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All corners are in amazing crisp and unworn condition with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: One of the very best true mono covers I have seen for this classic Dylan album in years. The depth of colour and clarity of the laminate makes this very special for fans of the great man. One to hold and admire, this should please many, if not most collectors, and a rare opportunity.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the orange CBS promotional inner also has little to fault bar a little light corner creasing (bottom left). Unlined with two crisp undamaged window circles and all edges naturally intact, the paper still clean and fresh.

The Poster: EXCELLENT: again arguably better. I have never seen this before ever. A promotional black and white poster for this album, printed on one side with a matt finish – the back is plain white with a few small spots or hints of toning to politely remind of age – printed on quite thick heavy paper and remaining unmounted (e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks). Hardly creased with crisp neat unworn edges, the folds solid and unweakened. Slight curl to the edges which happens over time. Certainly a major rarity, try finding another and guaranteed original. An item that will rarely ever be seen or offered – or better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: yet again, arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly light/very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, few even register. Compare to many, if not most mono records found these days, this popular Dylan classic has survived the era ver well. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early mono pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on standard stereo equipment. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely mono record, arguably the rarest Dylan album in this mode. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
