Description
BOB DYLAN - SELF PORTRAIT - ORIGINAL U.S. LABEL ISSUE 360" SOUND STEREO LABEL PRESSING - Columbia C2X-30050. Discs and Labels are Near Mint; Sleeve is Near Mint Minus.
In the list of rarest US label versions by Bob Dylan, the Columbia Records "6 Eye" design, pressed for Dylan's eponymous debut LP (approximately 5,000), is at or near the top. Thereafter (some would say even before the 6 Eye versions), original white label promos of his first 8 albums on the original 1960s label, sometimes referred to as "2 Eye" version (possibly in lower numbers than 5,000), would be next. Other anomalies include the "raised eye" experimental label version of Another Side of Bob Dylan, which was actually pressed in much smaller quantities than the debut or any promos, and this lessor understood alternate label pressing of Self Portrait. Although original issues of Self Portrait were Dylan’s first American albums to feature the "Columbia" circumference label used throughout the 1970s, a small number (thought to be from a midwestern pressing plant) featured the older, ‘60s label, featuring the 2 Eye or 360 Degree legend labels. Seller personally interviewed a representative from a Midwestern vinyl manufacturing plant in the early 1980s who claimed that his supervisor ordered the ‘60s labels be used before beginning the newer "Columbia" circumference labels as a cost-saving measure. Whether or not this report is accurate remains to be learned, there is no doubt that very few copies of the 1960s labels show up on copies of Self Portrait pressed in the U.S. Early Canadian pressings also utilized the ‘60s labels, but in higher numbers than these U.S. counterparts. Titles are: All The Tired Horses; Alberta #4; I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know; Days of ‘49; Early Mornin’ Rain; In Search of Little Sadie; Let It Be Me; Little Sadie; Woogie Boogie; Belle Isle; Living The Blues; Like A Rolling Stone (live); Copper Kettle; Gotta Travel On; Blue Moon; The Boxer; The Mighty Quinn (live); Take Me As I Am; Take A Message To Mary; It Hurts Me Too; Minstrel Boy (live); She Belongs To Me (live); Wigwam; Alberta #2.
