Label/Format and Info: CBS with matt, rough textured surfaces and the very early 33 speed indicator. This a very first pressing pressed copy pressed by Philips, confirmed by the BPG 62193 1L / 2L text above the ‘RECORD FIRST PUBLISHED 1963’ text see near the 3 o’clock position of both labels. That along with the distinctive matrix details seen further down. This proves without any doubt a 1963 first pressing. Subsequent pressings were made by CBS themselves with different matrixes and label text. This copy also includes the very rare uncredited flipbacked cover that was replaced by the paste-on style back made from 1964. Rarely seen, and especially in this outstanding condition, the pressing Bob Dylan connoisseurs and purists really want.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with very deep orange colour and only quite light, fine and faint spindle marks. These first mono Philips pressed examples are seldom found much better.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. Way heavier than most on this label.

Rarity: Rare and only pressed by Philips for CBS for the briefest time in 1963 before, predictably CBS pressed their own records. Elusive and rare in their own right, and in mono in very fine condition with the elusive uncredited flipbacked cover also superb, this is a rare, seldom-found vintage Dylan classic.

Brief Info: The second Bob Dylan album, and unlike the debut, most songs were originals. A sublime set from his classic acoustic folk era and one of the greatest within the genre. Most fans and collectors will know the album well. Genuine first press mono copies, pressed by Philips (Phonogram) are seldom seen, and even more so in clean, well-looked after condition. A very rare opportunity for collectors of the great folk musician.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): grading a 1963 rarity less would hardly be doing it fully justice. A single format with front laminate, this covers all folds and ends on the three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and quite smooth. This has the ‘WARNING’ Copyright text, this for CBS recordings, and very much in style for the Philips and other related record companies at this time. Printed and made in England, uncredited, most subsequent printings included the print company who made them. The vintage white polylined inner sleeve is included.

Lamination & Front: A truly gorgeous looking front, the laminate fresh, shiny and clear, hardly aged with minimal traces of any dulling, no lifting and few creases at all. Any present very gentle and faint. The famous artwork of Dylan with his then girlfriend Susan Rotolo, an artist and major influence on his early music is in fantastic clean condition with deep unaged colour that offers the most perfect impact for cover connoisseurs. It remains one of the most iconic and famous pieces of cover art ever put on a folk album, and here seen to near maximum advantage. This front hardly aged at all and this one of the rarest and earliest printings ever made.

Cover Back: Again in fantastic condition, the main matt back panel with little to fault at all and barely giving any clues of its considerable age. The three flipbacks all clean and solid with any end burring tiny and little. A small few fine surface creases on the top left one, but little else. Like the front, this uncredited back will prove very difficult to find better.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still straight, smooth and barely worn.

Bottom Edge: Slightly less straight, but then as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Reasonably sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. The text is unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate, also nicely centred on the narrow depth.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A highly impressive all-round example of this genuine vintage flipbacked and uncredited cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a thin paper polylined white inner that includes the ‘BRITISH PATENTS NO 800513’ text along with ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’. The paper only gently darkened with age and no hard creases, only some crinkle near the corner areas. Two neat crisp untorn window circles and the lining intact and still quite clear with crinkle. All edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, how many mono fragile acoustic folk albums from this year will be found much better than this? A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with modest careful plays on all the evidence with any surface marks or traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Most collectors will know the state these albums will be found in, and this one has defied the vintage mono era very well indeed with scant clues of its true age. Visually a super record that should please many, and possibly even most collectors who want the genuine rare and elusive originals.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking classic folk album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Being an acoustic album, the odd sporadic gentle click is near impossible to avoid at very best, but few available copies will outperform this early first Philips pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly, and with due care. It appears very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. These first issue Dylan classics rarely surface much better from 1963, especially in mono. Most seen, even with the 33 speed indicator will be CBS pressings with their very different matrix numbers and details.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
