Hands Down is the tenth studio album by Bob James (10th studio album as reflected by the title and cover), released in 1982. This was a turning point in James career, with the tracks "It's Only Me" and "Spunky" being early exponents of electronic jazz. At the time electronica was transforming popular music in reaction to the big orchestrations of the late 1970s (prevalent on James' previous works). The minimalist tastes of the era were also reflected in "Roberta", which mostly featured James in a piano solo. A who's-who of stellar session support including Marcus Miller, Jon Faddis, Harvey Mason, Luther Vandross, Doug Stegmeyer, Steve Khan, Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel) and many more.

CX is a noise reduction system for recorded analog audio. It was developed by CBS Laboratories (a division of CBS) in the late 1970s as a competitor to other noise reduction (NR) systems such as Dolby and dbx, and was officially introduced in 1981. The name CX was derived from "Compatible eXpansion", a feature of the technique. The CX integrated circuit U2141B was developed by AEG-Telefunken, Germany, in 1982, by the same team who also designed the High?Com noise reduction system, a broadband compander with up to 20 dB of noise reduction. Hitachi also offered dedicated CX chips named HA12043 and HA12044 in 1983

CX was originally designed by CBS as a noise-reduction technology for vinyl LP records, similar to the earlier dbx disc or High-Com II systems. CX-encoded records required a special CX expander connected to a stereo system, in order to fully reproduce the CX encoded sound on the LP. However, CX-encoded records could also be played without a decoder, with a resulting acceptable amount of dynamic range compression.

The label predicted that CX encoding would become standard on all new LP releases but this did not happen. CBS struggled to gain support for the system from other record companies. Approximately 70 CX encoded LP titles were released by CBS up to 1983 in the United States.

(very minor wear but should sound great/well cared for) VG+ = "Very Good Plus" (slightly above average, light visible wear) VG = "Very Good" (average, scuffs & shelf wear, still a very enjoyable listen) G = "Good"(scratches; visible marks and wear. We will only list these on "high" collectables) **  (-) Minus indicates a fine grade between next lower level. / All LPs are US releases & STEREO unless noted.
