BOB SMITH 'The Visit' Double LP (Liechtenstein, Tapestry Records, Catalogue #TPT 244/2) Brand new/unplayed copy of limited (and now SOLD OUT/OUT OF PRINT) Tapestry label Double LP vinyl edition (edition of 500 copies only) of legendary and always highly sought-after 1970 psych rock epic double album by Bob Smith.

'It's pretty ambitious to debut with a double album, but Bob Smith had enough ideas to fill four sides. His voice is a little serious/loungy but he does at least try to sing like a rock guy when he's not trying to sound like a prophet. If you like D.R. Hooker's singing, you'll like Smith's. The music is in a wide range of late '60s-70s psych genres, from hardrock to upbeat folk-rock to jazzy experimentation. The arrangements are always interesting. Backing vocals, a range of keyboards and clever sound effects are used well. Smith's band is excellent, and there's plenty of hot guitar-keyboard interplay. A few songs have some pretty heavy mellotron. As is the case with most double LPs, side three is the weird one. The 8-minute "India Slumber" might be a bit much for some listeners, but otherwise this album is surprisingly accessible. By the end of four sides, I wish Smith would have lightened up a bit, but this set is full of great songs and great moments. Even the requisite blues song is pretty good. 'Another significant collectable from the California rock scene that will interest readers. Not really a solo album at all, as Smith is backed by eight very capable musicians. Much of the music is instrumental, achieving a mystical and 'psychedelic' atmosphere, although there are a few more mainstream tracks and some nice bluesy guitar work in places.
