For the first time, all the music BOBBY BEAUSOLEIL composed for the legendary Lucifer Rising soundtrack has been compiled into a single public release. The Lucifer Rising Suite begins with the 1967 version of the soundtrack and continues through a logical sequence of the recordings made in the years spanning 1976-79. With respect to the latter, the original master tapes were mined for music that had not been heard by anyone in nearly three decades. The newly unearthed recordings were then restored, cleaned up and combined with those previously released to make the anthology as complete as possible.



Bobby Beausoleil “The Music of Bobby Beausoleil (Lucifer Rising Suite)” (AJNA) This is a monumental document, done up properly, lavishly – 4 LP box with extensive liners & fantastic artwork, a couple large, fold out posters – beautiful. The saga of this music sits right at the heart of a central chapter in 20th century history, & at the same time is a testament to the human spirit under extreme tribulation, & at the same time there is plenty of excellent music here, forgetting the backstory completely, & just dealing with sound. But we’ll get to that in a minute. Maybe most people, or at least most people reading this, know at least a little about Kenneth Anger’s film “Lucifer Rising” & Bobby Beausoleil’s trajectory relative to it: Anger approached Beausoleil after a performance of Beausoleil’s band, The Orkestra, in San Fransisco, asking him to play the part of Lucifer in his film. Beausoleil accepted on the condition that he also compose the music for the film’s soundtrack, which Anger accepted. Beausoleil moved into Anger’s house & work commenced, but as the hippie scene unraveled around them & everything seemed to be going south, intensified by the fringe reality & demonic currents central to the project, Anger & Beausoleil fell out, with Beausoleil heading down to LA, eventually ending up in the Manson circle. Though Beausoleil wasn’t directly involved in the infamous Manson murders, he took to hanging out with the Hell’s Angels on the periphery of Manson’s scene, & ended up killing a drug dealer in a deal for the Angels gone bad. All the prosecutor had to say at the trial (& by this time, the Manson murders had blown up) was “Manson” & “Hells Angels” & Beausoleil got life - & you can forget about parole, too. Meanwhile, Anger relocates to England & secures Jimmy Page to score the recuscitated Lucifer Rising project. But then Anger feuds with Page, & he’s again without a composer for his now much more finished film (Page’s soundtrack makes the rounds in bootleg form, its worthwhile – in the vein of the bridges of “Dazed in Confused” or “Whole Lotta Love,” maybe). So he reconnects with Beausoleil, now in the California State Prison at Tracy (rough), & somehow, through the good graces of the prison administration, Beausoleil is back on board, & over the next 3 years (’76-’79) composes several hours of music, using fellow prisoners as additional musicians, on basic recording equipment & self designed or modified instruments, which is eventually edited down to the half hour or so of the films ultimate length. So here, finally, is the complete sessions from which the soundtrack was culled, & additionally there is a side long piece which was recorded by Beausoleil & his group the Magick Powerhouse of OZ in San Francisco or the original version of the film, which is a fairly amazing bit of archaeology as it was deemed lost forever amidst the acrimony of the collapse of the original project. The San Fransico session was recorded live, & mostly improvised, although there are some themes worked into it. This side is vintage free-psych, pretty far removed from the Dead or Airplane or anyone else on the SF scene in those days, almost closer to something like Sun Ra, or a somewhat more primitive Sun Ra, with acid guitar over the top – fantastic. The rest of the music was composed & performed in the prison, & is generally more concrete, with a definite Floyd influence running through much of it, but rougher, more strongly blues based (though with plenty of post psychedelic proto electronic moves). The conditions under which this music was created were plenty adverse (gang wars, riots, lockdowns, not to mention players coming & going as they passed through the prison system), & at times its amazing what Beausoleil was able to coax out of the musicians, who mostly would’ve been more at home in a basic blues jam situation. In fact, one whole side is taken up by a plodding, sloppy jam, messed up drums, bass mistakes…well it hints at at a sort of redemptive beauty, probably would have been nice at about 3:30, rather than 22 minutes. But it’s really the only side, of 8 sides, that would’ve been better left off the set. The music tends to alternate between dark, post psychedelic soundscapes crafted by Beausoleil in his cell, & full band workouts, mostly, as I said, in a post-Floyd vein, but of full of phased, flanged, floating textures. Ocassionally the drummer looses the time…maybe the drums were overdubbed after Beausoleil’s bass/guitar, or maybe the drummers were just kinda off. At least one of the drummers, though, is excellent. And Beausoleil is consistently excellent, in a sort of post-psychedelic blues rock way. The final disc is the soundtrack proper, edited to the final version of Anger’s film, which was finally released in ’80.
