BOBBY CHARLES - BOBBY CHARLES LP

BEARSVILLE (tan label with coloured logo) IRSP26  UK 19??

**********************************

This excellent album was recorded in 1972. Issued on Bearsville it had a different cat number to this. This is on the bearsville label, though manufactured and distributed by Island. A re-issue??

With appearances from Dr John, David Sanborn, this is a really great album covering a range of styles ranging from Cajun to R&B to Country to Pop rock. (see below)

Notes I found on the net -

Far more successful as a songwriter than a recording artist, Bobby's relatively rare forays into the recording studio are still excellent examples of the New Orleans / Louisiana take on R&B and swamp pop. He was born Robert Charles Guidry in the country town of Abbeville and grew up listening first to traditional Cajun music and then R&B and very early rock'n'roll.

As a teenager, Charles began singing with a band called the Cardinals. Only around fourteen years old at the time and performing at Mount Carmel High School dances, he wrote 'See You Later Alligator', which eventually came to the attention of Leonard Chess around the time that the Chicago label was beginning to make an impression on the national charts. Chess arranged for Charles to record the song in New Orleans, released the single in 1955 and signed him sight unseen - creating the Bobby Charles moniker at the same time. The song has of course gone on to be recorded by many others, selling millions along the way. Bobby had some limited success as an artist with Chess, recording a number of R&B tracks that were already beginning to show a strong Cajun influence in their writing.

It was as a songwriter however that he increasingly began to find a degree of consistent success. The most obvious examples of this early work include the Fats Domino hit 'Walkin' To New Orleans' and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Henry's 'But I Do'. Charles was still recording in the 60s, albeit sporadically, and was already beginning to experiment, adding a country influence to the basic cajun flavoured R&B mix.
In 1971 he recorded the critically acclaimed "Bobby Charles", produced by the Band's Rick Danko. In addition to members of the Band, there were guest appearances from the likes of Dr John, David Sanborn and Amos Garrett. Despite the plaudits, it didn't sell very well at the time, but it's still available and is well worth buying. It's got some of his best writing on it, including the excellent 'Small Town Talk' and 'Street People'.

TRACKS - Street people, Long face, I must be in a good place now, Save me Jesus, He's got all the whiskey, Small town talk, Let yourself go, Grow too old, I'm that way, Tennessee blues.

The sleeve is in great condition, the only fault being a seam split along the bottom edge. The vinyl looks virtually 100% and sounds it too. A couple of hints of Mint- but most of it Mint like a CD. Quite rare for any LP (even new) to sound this nice.

A great copy, however if you do not agree with my stated condition of the item, I do accept returns for up to 14 days.

CONDITION

I try to play all records and take notes as they play, giving an accurate description of each. Please see my feedback comments.

HOW I RATE CONDITION

APPEARANCE

SURFACE WEAR  This I consider to be the effect caused by removing the vinyl from the sleeve and starts at very light and goes to average and heavy

GENERAL WEAR  This is wear that usually happens when the vinyl is exposed and can include numerous effects of not being looked after

MARKS  Can be light scuffs, effects of dirt, etc.

SCRATCHES  These can be light, faint or obvious, but I do try to point these out.

SOUND

MINT    To me, a Mint sound is just the same as listening to a cd.

MINT-  A sound that reminds the listener once in a while that it is vinyl and not a cd  (usually between tracks and quite faint)

EX+      A more regular version of the above,

EX        More common background noise, though still well in the background, often found along with a Mint sound, and often noticeable between tracks, possibly short runs of faint ticks sometimes

EX-      The above being more pronounced & starting to intrude on the listening pleasure

VG+     The background noise is becoming more common and obvious, though still quite listenable

VG       This is probably intruding on the listening pleasure

VG-      Obvious problems, usually ticks and crackles though still listenable and worth grading

Good + Getting to the point where I feel a swap would be in order

Good    Probably generally crackly & starting to be not worth grading

DISTORTION  I describe this when there is a crackly break-up of certain notes on the music. It can range from very light distortion through to heavy distortion.

TICKS  I regard these as a 'thinner' sound rather than CLICKS  which are more pronounced

CLEANING AND PACKING

I clean all records with the MOTH PRO ll cleaning machine, and then LPs are placed in a new anti-static inner sleeve while 7" singles are placed in a new white paper sleeve. (all original inners are included where possible). The whole set is then put in a new poly sleeve for transport (this can be handy for storing records). This is then placed between two corrugated cardboard strengethers, and sent in a cardboard record mailer. To make sure there is no chance of damage, tape is applied around the edges.
