BOBBY WILLIAMS GROUP. Boogaloo Mardi Gras (pts. 1 & 2) (Seven B 7018) This was pretty much an unspoken collectors 45 until very recently, where there has been a serious price explosion with it jumping from £30 to £150 and that's just the Capitol issues and demos, lord knows what a Seven B first pressing would go for? Both sides of this 45 are utterly amazing, Part 1 is pure caveman funk, no real song structure, just a pounding rhythm building and building and buillding and stomping on even further until eventually a single horn punches out of the beat before the track pounds away into the fade out. Just imagine hearing this live with wild funky horns blaring over the top the band pounding it out until they cant play anymore! Part two takes the Big Chief funky Mardi Gras sound and turns the heat up with a funkier variation of the same ryhthms banged out on part 1, this time the horns are here in full force, wild, drunken and blaring. There is absolutely no way in my opinion that the vocalist with this 'Bobby Williams Group' is the same (Florida?) Bobby Williams that recorded for Normar, R&R and Duplex, for a start this guys voice is a deep LA accent. Which means that this Bobby Williams could instead be New Orleans drummer Bobby Williams as suggested already by Larry Grogan over at the funky 16 corners website (see my links page), which if this is the case would mean that the amazing drumming isn't James Black! Unless they are both banging those skins together - that might account for the sound?
