BONZO DOG BAND: Humanoid Boogie 1968 UK ACETATE UNRELEASED 45
For auction here is a incredibly rare, if not unique, psych disc featuring the immortal Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah) Band. Known for their surreal satirical style in sending up the psychedelic era, every now and then they played it straight and freaked out with the best of them. This is one such noise.
Humanoid Boogie was later included on the Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse album but this acetate suggests that at one time it may have been looked at as a single - possibly the follow up to the band's only hit 'Urban Spaceman". If it was then it must have been decided it was just too weird for chart success - because it is.
A total wig out it features a driving groove led by pounding electric piano ala I Am The Walrus with Neil Innes launching into a non stop machine gun lyric until halfway through when a fuzz guitar does battle with a mellotron - and then mania simply builds from there.
Humanoid Boogie would later be re-covered by Innes himself as a solo artist and also, most interestingly, by Andy Partridge of XTC.
It is a magnificent creation. Moreover for the many global collectors of The Bonzo's & Viv Stanshall - to discover something new is a wonderful bonus. I have never seen another of these and it is not listed on Discogs or anywhere else.
The disc is in very good condition especially for a fragile 52 year old artefact - acetates were not known for there robust construction but this wild blast has survived extremely well. No deep scratches whatsoever, just some spidery hairlines, and certainly no jumps or skips.
How many other copies in the world are there of this single? Likely answer is none. This one would have been privately pressed for either the band or the record label to see how it shaped up as a potential hit. That it was never released as a 45 says it all. It really is a challenging sound, pure freaky '68, and Thank God for that.
