Description
Original April 4, 1996 copy of the OC Weekly with the six-page cover story “I Owe Bruce Springsteen $63.536.50,” a history of the Southern California vinyl bootleg record scene as experienced by me and the legendary Vicky Vinyl and John Wizardo, among others. It ranges from our being bootleg fans in the early 1970s, to buying them from TMOQ, TAKRL and others to sell at swap meets, to making the records ourselves, to the famed and not terribly happy for us FBI raids and Bruce Springsteen/CBS lawsuit in 1979 that put an end to our bootlegging ways. There’s a lot of inside info here, along with our first-person recollections of living through the bootleg years. It’s fun reading for the whole family!
The paper is in excellent condition. On the rare occasions when this article has turned up for sale, it’s gone for in excess of $100, and that was just for the clipped-out article. This is the entire issue here, cover to cover, which includes an interview I did with John Hiatt, an account of the 1996 SXSW fest and other fun.
