Playback draws together nearly three decades of Wilson’s post-Beach Boys work, combining studio and live performances with two recordings that were previously unreleased when this collection appeared.

Playback is more interesting than the usual retrospective. It was Wilson’s first anthology devoted specifically to his solo career, spanning work from his landmark 1988 debut onwards and including both studio and live recordings.
The physical edition is particularly well conceived, with archival and studio photography, liner notes by David Wild, and the Robert Matheu portrait used for the front cover.
