Description
BRILLIANT CORNERS, Thelonious Monk, Riverside, Original Mono LP.
Both sides stamped: US PAT # RE 23,946 GB PAT # 713418.
Hand inscribed side 1: RLP - 12 -226 - A, side 2: RLP - 12- 226 - B 'Grooved' label.
*UP-DATED INFO 16/10/21*:
1) Run out both sides hand inscribed "16 1Y"...across the run out, not along it! The "16" is above the "1", which is above the "Y". I shall try to add photo's.....
2) Address on back cover is "418 West 49th Street"
Rather than try to emulate the vague grading systems used commonly on Ebay (some noise or none?...Which tracks affected?...etc), records on offer have been played through (couple for the first time since acquisition years ago!) with any surface noise noted. Equipment used: Garrard 301, AT1500 arm, Denon 110 cart, valve disc stage. 'Tick' = low level, occaisional and mostly only heard during quiet passages. 'Click' = high level, sharp, intrusive, occaisional or repetitive (typical sound of deep scratch)
Note. Mono records were manufactered for play by a conical stylus operating vertically, which produces best sound quality. Stereo records operate with left/right motion of stylus, and playing a mono record with a stereo cartridge unfortunately accentuates any surface noise!
This record/cartridge mis-match is not damaging to the record, but the artificial increase in perceived surface noise that it generates is markedly reduced by switching a stereo preamp/amp to 'mono', making a significant improvement in sound quality, and so.......
The notes below on record condition were made with stereo preamp switched to 'mono'.
Record
Side 1 Track 1: two clicks during piano solo, few ticks during drum solo and occaisional ticking. Track 2: ticking, some repetitive, during piano solo, one click at start of, and during, bass solo.
Side 2 Track 1: occaisional ticks, noticeable mainly during celeste solo. Track 2: piano solo track, occaisional ticks. (Dynamic piano!)
Track 3: some occaisional ticks, and during bass solo. (Resonant drums!)
Inner sleeve
After review, record placed in new poly lined inner.
Cover
Thick American card cover. Front shiny, unmarked. Back has typical applied paper info sheet that has inevitably darkened over time (note - the camera has brightened the rear of cover somewhat in the first photo of back, and darkened the right side in second photo! The second photo gives an idea of the overall, uniform 'foxing' discolouration and slightly darker edges of back.). Some wear to all four corners.
Record supplied in vynil outer sleeve.
