'Blinded by the light' came about when Columbia president Clive Davis, upon listening to an early version of Greetings from Asbury Park N.J., felt the album lacked a potential single. Springsteen wrote this and "Spirit in the Night" in response.

According to Springsteen, the song came about from going through a rhyming dictionary in search of appropriate words. The first line of the song, "Madman drummers, bummers, and Indians in the summers with a teenage diplomat" is autobiographical—"Madman drummers" is a reference to drummer Vini Lopez, known as "Mad Man" (later changed to "Mad Dog"); "Indians in the summer" refers to the name of Springsteen's old Little League team; "teenage diplomat" refers to himself. The remainder of the song tells of many unrelated events, with the refrain of "Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night".

"Blinded by the Light" was the first song on, and first single from Greetings from Asbury Park N.J. Springsteen's version was commercially unsuccessful and did not appear on the music charts.

·       45-RPM SINGLE RECORD:

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(d)          The single comes with its original 'Playback' series Columbia mailer.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(f)            Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD IS EXCELLENT (EXC). HOWEVER, WE CAUTION that a minor "hairline" crack in the vinyl affects the center of the play area. We stress that the hairline crack DOES NOT reach all the way to either the beginning (the lip/intro groove) of the record or the dead wax (trail-off vinyl) and does NOT cause the vinyl to stick, skip, split or separate, and the record plays perfectly fine throughout. This is for all practical purposes a minor cosmetic nuisance.

·       PICTURE SLEEVE:

THE SLEEVE IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Sleeve has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams and across both sides (front and back)

-        Sleeve shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        Sleeve has a partially split left seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE SLEEVE:

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
