Wow, one of the biggest Springsteen collector's items!
I've had this record in my collection practically since it appeared. Back in 1974, 1975, I worked at the Yale college radio station, WYBC. Records would come in every week and we'd file and play 'em. One thing we had to do was write all over the album so they wouldn't get stolen while the record was in active circulation at the station. This was the time before promo stamps or those big stickers that would list songs and timings. So we just used markers and ID'd the albums as belonging to WYBC.
At some point we replaced the album with a new copy or received the regular release with the other cover and this version was tossed. I ended up keeping this rare promo version.
On the front, someone at the radio station wrote "Springsteen", "New 8/25/75" and "WYBC", which is partially wiped out. On the back, there's a funny drawing that says, "We listen to WYBC". Inside is another cartoon balloon, taking a crack at Bob Dylan. Again, we had to mark up the albums so they wouldn't get stolen and re-sold. Might as well have fun with the markings.
Also inside, to the right, are tape marks where either an 8x10 photo or press info used to be attached. Or maybe a play log, I'm not sure.
In terms of rarity, the cover has the famous "script" ID instead of the released, printed version. And the back does not contain any info about the songs, credits. It's totally pre-production blank.
The record itself seems to be a later replacement. It doesn't have any promo stamps and the track listing is the same as what was officially released. The original record that came with this sleeve was probably tossed after it wore out, a common thing we did at the station. If we only knew.....
This album sleeve is one of the most sought after Springsteen collectibles and incredibly rare.
