In the wake of the number one British ranking for 20 Golden Greats in 1978 and the release of the feature film The Buddy Holly Story, MCA U.K. assembled this six-LP box set (which finally was released in the U.S. in February 1981). It traces Buddy Holly's career from his country & western duo with Bob Montgomery in 1954/1955 to his 1956 Nashville sessions for Decca Records; the Clovis, NM, recordings with the Crickets and producer Norman Petty that launched his career in 1957; the New York sessions of 1958; the final 1958 demo recordings; the various posthumously overdubbed versions of the demos; and other assorted rarities. In other words, all the material that Decca/MCA previously had spread across seven LPs -- The "Chirping" Crickets, Buddy Holly, That'll Be the Day, Reminiscing, Showcase, Holly in the Hills, and Giant -- between 1957 and 1969 (not counting the many compilations) was here, plus more. The box also contained an extensive scrapbook, lots of liner notes, and a detailed discography. It was, thus, the state of the art in box sets just prior to the CD era, and given Holly's importance in the history of rock & roll, an essential album for any serious collector. With the passing of the LP era, it is out of print, and MCA claims to be gathering more unreleased material for some comparable box set, though years go by without its appearing. If you needed one record album to demonstrate what the most popular music of the second half of the 20th century sounded like, this would be it.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (side 1 has some superficial scuffs and is separately graded as VG++)

(b)          The album comes with the original insert still intact.

(c)           The album comes with the original booklet still intact.

(d)          The records come in their original, custom, inner sleeves, which are UNIQUE to this album.

(e)           The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE BOX IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The box has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        The box  has two corners and one seam separated/split  (nothing significant); both have been delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        The box has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  on one of the seams (sides) of the lid (top part)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-        The box has a minor 'bump' (dent) on one of the sides of the lid

-        The box has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)
