Budgie : Budgie 1L / 1L 1st Press Red / Pink 'Dogbone' Label 1971

This very collectable first pressing plays with superb audio on both sides with no real intrusion.  There is just a minimal amount of light static on the S2 intro and I do mean minimal!  The clarity, power and definition of the audio is STUNNING throughout and nowhere is that more obvious than on the two classics 'The Author' and 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman'.  They both play with incredible audio!  The quieter tracks 'Everything In My Heart' and 'You And I' also play with exceptional clarity which is a rarity.  A classic debut album that does not disappoint.

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the original inner sleeve has also been preserved very well with only a little fading / marking around the edges.

A first press is denoted by the red / pink 'dog bone' labels and the 1L / 1L matrix.  As can be seen this is a very early first pressing with only a single 'A' stamper on each side.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no scratches.  There are some faint hairlines on both sides and S2 also has a more obvious hairline mark across the first track and a little of the second but it is superficial as has no affect on the audio quality.  The red / pink 'dogbone' labels are unmarked and have only minimal spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Guts' has no background and that is a rarity!  Not even a dust tick.  Shelley's opening vocal is equal to that and from then on it plays without any interference and with that typical deep, rich Budgie sound.  The audio has great definition and resonance and it is only as good as this because the vinyl has been so well preserved over the last 52 years.  Not taken to any parties obviously!  This is a Mint start to this classic debut album.

The acoustic 'Everything In My Heart' plays beautifully with no intrusion.  Not not one dust tick let alone anything worse and Mint is again deserved.  STUNNING clarity.

The two minute quiet intro on 'The Author' plays with exceptional clarity with only a handful of barely audible dust ticks at the beginning and one minor static tick.  The vocal section is just perfect, the clarity could not be any more impressive, and then Bourge's first classic riff is superb!  Incredible power and depth!  Shelley's high octane vocal combines perfectly with the power of the music and of course his deep bass adds so much to the overall sound.  It continues in the same precise way and the mid instrumental is so strong and powerful and there is no distortion on the top end.  Audio does not get any better than this!  There is no 'muddiness' to the sound and the final vocal is 'as new' also.  A stunning version and if the intro is Near Mint+ then the rest is Mint for sure.

The intro on the classic 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' is so clean and as I often say when grading this LP you can picture Philips looking around the famous Rockfield Studio for the percussive elements!  The clarity of sound on this intro is superb and as the volume increases the standard does not drop.  Shelley's opening vocal is faultless and of course you're just waiting for that first classic up-tempo riff!  Easily one of the finest in heavy rock and it does not disappoint.  Introduced by Shelley's stunning bass line it plays with outstanding power and definition and it continues to play with STUNNING quality and no intrusion.  Shelley's brief bass solo is 'as new' and the next section of this incredible instrumental delivers on every single level.  The power, the depth, the clarity, the definition - it is all 10/10.  I cannot emphasise enough just how well it plays and that applies to the entire track.  The end section including the final vocal is just as strong and I have to grade it as Mint it truly is a sensational version.  Turn it up full blast there is zero distortion!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Rape Of The Locks' has just a small number of minor statics on the intro and one static tick as Philips comes in soon followed by Shelley the playback is superb.  Every vocal and instrumental section play with sublime quality and again the audio is as strong and deep as per S1.  No ticks, clicks etc.  The mid instrumental is so clean and powerful and the final vocal section has no intrusion either.  Here I will grade the intro as Ex+ and the remainder as Mint

The intro on 'All Night Petrol' has a couple of barely audible statics and then the opening vocal plays with perfect clarity.  From then on it plays with impeccable quality and with no interference.  As good as back in '71 when first pressed!  The audio is still so clean and 'fresh' and you can hear each note so clearly, nothing is lost.  Bourge's solo section is flawless and the driving percussive / bass section is equally as good.  The rest of the track plays to the same high end standard and Mint- is an honest assessment of audio although the minus might be a little harsh!

The acoustic 'You And I' plays with exceptional clarity with no clicks or pops.  The audio is so clean and I only noticed 2/3 very light background ticks that really do not require a mention.  Let's say Mint-

Another classic in 'Homicidal Suicidal' and the intro is 'as new' without a doubt.  Shelley's opening vocal has no background and it continues to play with STUNNING power and depth through every section.  One mega light tick in the first instrumental section and you can't help but admire the sonic quality on offer here.  The audio definition is up there with the best I have ever heard and there are no negatives.  The first 'quieter' moment plays with great clarity and the following 'heavy' bass solo from Shelley is so strong, never heard depth like it.  The accompanying vocal is faultless and end crescendo / percussive section rounds off this classic perfectly with no intrusion.  A wonderful Mint- version.

In summary this genuine first pressing plays to a superb standard with no interference as such.  There are no clicks or pops on either side and that is a real rarity for this album as I generally find them heavily played.  A little static at the start of S2 but it is only very minimal and that's about it background wise.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is stunning throughout and you would be hard pressed to find a better copy.  You want the two classics 'The Author' and 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' to play well and they certainly do!  A classic debut in superb condition - it has not been played very much and that is reflected in the overall sonic quality.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear.  The edges have hardly any rubbing and the thin spine is very clean and remains 100% legible with only minimal compression here and there.  All the corners are in great shape with very little wear and the opening edge is incredibly clean, almost perfect.  The front cover is has just one small sticker removal mark top right and there is also a crease line in the same corner that you can only see when you hold the cover at a certain angle.  It is very clean with only a couple of minor faint marks by the spine and some faint ringwear.  The back cover just has a little creasing top left and has no marking.  A fine example overall and you won't find many better!

The original poly-lined Stereo inner (dated 1-71) is in excellent order with no side splits and just has some age related fading around the edges and a little creasing.
