BUDGIE – Squawk ORIG MCA LP / MKPS 2023 (UK, Stereo, 1972)
Happy to present the 2nd Budgie LP – a great album which has taken years for many to fully appreciate, here in its original UK 1st press.
The single non-laminated sleeve designed by Roger Dean shows no reference to the manufacture and is presented in a TRUE VG + (Very Good Plus) condition. When I say VG+, I don’t mean handled to the high heavens with dirt, splits, softening and looking tired – like many VG sleeves you find on Ebay. I give it this grade mainly due to 2 long, deepish creses to the front and a similar one to the rear. If it weren’t for these, a slight ring impression to the rear and a couple of light nicks to the top edge, it’s pretty much close to near mint with a strong non-compressed spine, strong corners without dents or wear, full unfaded colour, no splits, tears or writing.
The original blue-black MCA labels are in fantastic condition with maybe 2 light spindle trails per side (at most!), no scrapes, writing, stickers, tears or other damage. Beautiful.
The solid and sharp medium-weight vinyl is a beauty. No scratches or hairlines and only the merest withdrawal type LIGHT scuff lines when viewed under severe light. Without embellishment, this has NOT had much play and looks lovely. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO THROUGHOUT and plays like a dream with NO snap, clicks or pops, NO distortion, loss of clarity or lack of definition and NOT EVEN any crackle or surface static. Visual grade is a minimum EX+ (Excellent Plus) and the play grade at least matched that. Superb listening experience!
Supplied in its original poly-lined 8/72 inner, this is a great record. Why should we care about Budgie? Because they were there very early on – one of the 1st truly ‘heavy’ bands and a band whose influence has slowly grown over the years (thrilling Metallica among others). This 2nd LP maintains the original line-up of Shelley, Bourge & Phillips and this copy has superb vinyl for a top grade rock collection. No reserve!
