·       NOTE: ATCO  used two (2) different catalog numbers for this album: the first number is 33-200, which is found only on original, withdrawn version with “Baby don’t scold me” ; the second number 33-200-A was used on the more common version with “For what it’s worth” instead of “Baby don’t scold me” What we have here is the very first catalog number: 33-200.

WHAT IS ENTIRELY INCREDIBLE ABOUT THIS LOT IS THAT, AMONG NUMEROUS OPENED (UNSEALED) WHITE LABEL PROMOS FROM THIS COLLECTION, NOT A SINGLE ONE HAD A PROMO STICKER OR STAMP ON THE COVER (BUT DID HAVE WHITE PROMOTIONAL LABELS!), AND WE SUSPECT THAT THE ORIGINAL OWNER PROBABLY RECEIVED  PROTOTYPES OR ADVANCE COPIES OF THESE CLASSIC TITLES EVEN BEFORE THE DISTRIBUTOR HAD A CHANCE TO MARK THEM AS PROMOTIONAL BY STAMPING OR STICKERING THEM AS PROMOTIONAL.

The band themselves were displeased with this record, feeling that the production did not capture their on-stage energy and excitement. Yet to most ears, this debut sounds pretty great, featuring some of their most melodic and accomplished songwriting and harmonies, delivered with a hard-rocking punch. "For What It's Worth" was the hit single, but there are several other equally stunning treasures. Stephen Stills' "Go and Say Goodbye" was a pioneering country-rock fusion; his "Sit Down I Think I Love You" was the band at their poppiest and most early Beatlesque; and his "Everybody's Wrong" and "Pay the Price" were tough rockers. Although Neil Young has only two lead vocals on the record (Richie Furay sang three other Young compositions), he's already a songwriter of great talent and enigmatic lyricism, particularly on "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," "Out of My Mind," and "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong." The entire album bursts with thrilling guitar and vocal interplay, with a bright exuberance that would tone down considerably by their second record.

These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(e)           Withdrawn “Baby don’t scold me”  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its regular, stock counterpart. We estimate that withdrawn copies of this album outnumber “regular” (later) copies  by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains
