Bush's Sixteen Stone, celebrating its 30th anniversary with a striking apple red vinyl reissue, remains a cornerstone of 90s alternative rock and a pivotal entry in the post-grunge scene. This debut album, released in 1994, features iconic tracks like 'Glycerine', 'Everything Zen', 'Comedown' and 'Machinehead', showcasing Gavin Rossdale's emotive vocals and the band's raw energy. Unlike their American counterparts, Bush's sound leaned towards melody rather than textural complexity. Critics often dismissed their abstract lyrics, but beneath the surface lies a wealth of clever imagery, as seen in songs like 'Swim' and the self-deprecating 'Testosterone'. The album thrives on catchy hooks and face-melting riffs, with tracks like 'Monkey' and 'X-Girlfriend' delivering relentless energy. Yet, it's the tender moments that shine, notably 'Glycerine', where Rossdale's sincerity resonates and 'Alien', which features delicate guitar work. 'Comedown' encapsulates the album's essence, reflecting on fleeting highs with a sense of nostalgia. Sixteen Stone epitomises the band's raw rock roots and remains an enduring classic that captures the spirit of a generation like no other.
