Back Alley Choir – Back Alley Choir – 1972 York Records LP – FYK406 – NM/EX+.
This auction is for the original UK pressing of the megarare Back Alley Choir LP by Back Alley Choir released on the short lived York Records label imprint of Decca Records in 1972 as catalogue number FYK406.
Rumoured to be limited to a pressing of 500 copies this folk rock LP is now extremely rare and almost impossible to find in any condition.
It contains thirteen tracks in total recorded by the band Back Alley Choir at Sound Recording Technology - SRT - Studios in Luton between January and May 1972 with renowned audio engineer and producer Dave Richardson. The tracks are a mixture of original songs, traditional arrangements and cover versions, including an excellent version of Fairport Convention’s Meet On The Ledge, originally released on their What We Did On Our Holidays LP in 1969. With both male and female vocals the overall sound is very reminiscent of the first three Fairport Convention albums.
I would grade the vinyl as Excellent Plus - only because it has some very light surface marks from where it has been removed from the sleeve – but it plays as Near Mint with no pops, crackles or skips and very little surface noise.
The LP sleeve – printed in England by Upton Printing Group - is in Near Mint condition as can be seen from the photos. The front of the sleeve is laminated ‘with Clarifoil made by British Celanese Limited’ and has none of the creasing normally associated with this type of sleeve.
The back of the LP sleeve has some browning from age – which is not surprising considering the LP is now 51 years old – but otherwise is in perfect condition with no splits, tears or writing. The sleeve notes by Dave Richardson, the Group Member information and song titles are all fully legible.
The spine has some very minor creasing below the H and O of Choir in the band’s name, as can be seen from the pictures but otherwise is completely intact. The wording of the record label, the title and catalogue number are all clearly visible.
Both labels are clean and complete and all of the original printed song titles, record company name and catalogue number are intact. There is very little spindle wear which suggests that it has rarely been played.
The Matrix numbers are:
Side 1 - XZAL-11525.P-2W
Side 2 – XZAL-11526-P-IL
The inner sleeve is a standard poly lined Decca inner sleeve dated 09/72.
