The two improvisations heard on this record were played and recorded at Mettler Studios by students of Free Movement Expression as taught by Barbara Mettler.
Students of Free Movement Expression learn first to express themselves freely through the movements of their bodies, then to translate movement rhythms into sound. They use natural sounds of the breath, voice, hands and feet, as well as all kinds of musical instruments, including some they have made themselves. Mempers of the group improvise together, moving freely as they play. Because of the strong movement impulses expressed in this music, these pieces make excellent accompaniment for creative dance.
These two improvisations present a sharp contrast between two types of movement expression: the metric (side 1), and the dramatic (side 2)
