Here’s a rare one:
Up for auction is a genuine copy of the Beastie Boys’ “Country Mike’s Greatest Hits,” on RED vinyl, on Grand Royal Records. It is 100% guaranteed original, NOT a bootleg. It is still in the shrink-wrap, and in mint/like new condition—I only opened it to verify its authenticity. It’s got it all—the white border, the Grand Royal markings, the rootin’ tootin’ cowboy labels, and, of course, the deliciously red vinyl. I almost had a heart attack when I opened it up.
This is the rarest, most collectible album I own (and I own more than a few). Only 300 of these were pressed, and they were given out as Christmas presents to the Beastie Boys’ friends and families. It was intended to be an inside joke--it was NEVER OFFICIALLY RELEASED. This is truly a piece of Beastie Boys history. It feels cool and special just to hold in your hand.
The legend goes as follows: “Sometime shortly after the recording of 1994's Ill Communication, Mike D. got hit in the head and ended up losing his memory. As the days went on and his fog lifted, he came back as a country-western singer who went by the name of Country Mike. The other Beasties were told by Mike's psychologist that if they didn't play along, his well-being could be in grave danger so needless to say...they played along. Mike eventually came back to his senses, but in the time of his altered-state, he managed to hit the studio and drop his own album which is as much of a crossover if not more than that Nelly/Tim McGraw joint from a few years back” (info from Miscreant Productions).
There are bootlegs of this floating around on eBay and elsewhere—the easiest way to tell whether they’re real or not is that authentic copies, such as this one, have a white border on the front cover. Bootlegs do not have this border; moreover, their labels are plain, white, and generally blah, unlike the colorful graphics on the official labels (sorry about the weird, orangey picks; I did the best I could!). And not only is bootleg vinyl only black in color, the sound quality is, of course, dubious at best. Really, for unreleased albums like this, provenance and “aura” are what you’re looking for. And this one’s got it.
