It all started with one machine. The location was Boston, Mass. The year was 1986. The "beat box" in question was the TR-808. Almost three decades later, Mansfield's obsession with drum machines has finally spilled out of his home and climate-controlled storage space into the world at large. With Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession (Get On Down Publishing), the Boston-based hip-hop producer and music industry veteran - who helped bring the world Edo G's "I Got To Have It" and "Be A Father To Your Child" in the early '90s, and went on to found Traffic Entertainment Group and co-found Get On Down - shares his deep love and respect for "Beat Boxes" on every page.
The book itself features gorgeous photos of 75 drum machines by Gary Land (www.garylandphotography.com); background and facts about each machine gathered by Mansfield; archival advertisements; and interviews with master drum machine programmers and innovators including Davy DMX, Schoolly-D, Marshall Jefferson and Roger Linn. The range of drum machines covered spans several decades, from the 1950s to the late 1980s.
Mansfield's collecting has never been about machines-as-trophies, hoarding or fetishism: he can play and/or program each machine he details in the book. His electronic children aren't kept in plastic, never to be touched or used. That's what gives the book its heart - Mansfield's emotional attachment to these objects that many people still see as robotic replacements for human percussion. But, as any good drum machine manipulator knows, even machines can have soul. And lest readers forget, Mansfield reminds us that drum machines have been used in the rock and pop world since the 1970s: Sly & The Family Stone, Kraftwerk, the Yellow Magic Orchestra and Blondie all benefited from beat boxes on their hits, as did artists ranging from New Order and Madonna to Prince and Bruce Hornsby in the '80s.
All of these aspects encompassing the wide-ranging and complex history of drum machines are documented and discussed in words and images in Beat Box, helmed and overseen by Joe Mansfield's expertise. It is part encyclopedia, part coffee-table photo book, and will enthrall music, technology and photography fans around the world.

We're  sorry... but we do NOT accept returns for records, needles,  or open box merchandise.

Warranty

Unless otherwise noted, all  items are shipped brand new / factory sealed. We are authorized dealers  for all merchandise that we sell. Rest assured that in addition to our  return policy, you are protected by the manufacturer's full warranty.

Domestic Shipping

Orders are shipped via UPS  and USPS. Most orders are shipped same or next business day, but please  allow up to 5 days handling time. Most orders above $100 will be shipped within  the continental US for FREE! We are happy to combine orders to help you  qualify for free shipping. Please note, there are a few exceptions in the  case of very heavy items such as large DJ cases and speakers. If you're  not sure, please contact us.

International Orders & Shipping

We are pleased to ship  worldwide! Please use the shipping calculator to determine your shipping  costs by country. Shipping times are not guaranteed and transit time is the  responsibility of the carrier. While rare, we cannot be held responsible  for border or customs delays.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Import  duties, taxes, and charges are buyer's responsibility and are not included  in the item / shipping cost!

Incorrect / Incomplete Address

Please double check the shipping  address before you complete your order. If the shipping information you  provide is incomplete or incorrect (ie. missing or incorrect apartment or  suite numbers, missing floor, when applicable), we will be charged a fee  by USPS. The fee to correct the shipping charges will be charged to the  customer.

Refused & Undeliverable Packages

DO NOT REFUSE A DELIVERY! If you  have an issue contact us and we accommodate you whenever possible.

Any refused or undeliverable  item will be subject to a 18% restocking fee plus all outbound and return  shipping charges and fuel surcharges we incur. This policy includes - but  is not limited to - refusals for items the customer wants to cancel after  an item has already shipped; refusals of delivery to avoid paying import  duties, taxes, or other charges imposed by customer's government; refusals  because customer no longer wants an item or purchased it elsewhere;  undeliverable items due to missing or incorrect information provided by  the customer; packages not received after 3 delivery attempts; packages  unclaimed at the UPS local office This policy applies whether an order  qualified for "free shipping" or not.

Refused items will be refunded  minus the fees outlined above after item is received in new/unopened  condition by our store, or when shipped directly from the manufacturer, at  the manufacturer's shipping facility.
