The Beatles "Yesterday And Today" 1966 Capitol T-2553 near mint peeled butcher (guaranteed the real thing)...and by now a lot of you know the history. This is butcher #5. I bought a total of 6 of these...I looked for only the highest quality, authentic second-state, mono butcher covers. I purchased them at the biggest record show in the country (Austin, Texas) and paid a premium to get only the best. As detailed below, I then contracted with Jim Hansen of Blue Jay Way Galleries to professionally peel them. Here is the description of butcher #5. The Beatles 100% guaranteed-real "Yesterday And Today" Capitol T-2553 mono LP, absolute first-pressing from June of 1966. The story goes like this: before the inoffensive trunk cover became the standard photo for this release, Capitol used this avant-garde Bob Whitaker photo taken on March 25, 1966 in Chelsea, London, England. This controversial cover photo depicts The Beatles in white butcher smocks surrounded by slabs of meat and decapitated baby dolls. This is called the infamous "Butcher" cover...totally recalled just as it was about to be distributed (included in this auction is a copy of the recall letter from Capitol Records dated June 14, 1966). Capitol Records, in a clever cost-saving move, decided to paste a different slick (the "trunk cover") over the 'butcher cover" instead of throwing them all away. I've also included the removed "trunk cover" slick with this auction. Again, the slick removal process was performed by Jim Hansen of Blue Jay Way Galleries in Los Angeles - one of only two recognized and qualified firms in the country who do this as a profession. The Near-Mint cover in this auction is Spizer-cataloged as CAP 2553.MC1PL (commonly referred to as a third-state, or peeled cover). It is totally clean and presentable...and the "peel-job" came out super-detailed revealing the butcher photo...with NO problems! The spine lettering is clearly legible (very rare with these)...AND CENTERED. This cover is also still basically white on all the edges (again, quite rare as a lot of these got 'tanned' and/or sun-faded, weathered, etc.). There are no writing marks anywhere...and no erasures or repairs. This is a #6 pressing plant cover originally manufactured in Los Angeles...and the paste-over was also done in Los Angeles, as well. I know I'm getting insanely detailed, but this one is "top-shelf"...the only ultra-minor item worth mentioning is the bottom right edge has a 1/4" beginning seamsplit...but I'm being extremely critical as this is so small. This is one of the nicest butchers ever made available. All edges are straight and clean. Again, of note is the quality of this item...it is so difficult to find an example like this (no splits, stains, or writing...flat, straight, with bright edges...a 100% perfect peel). Also included is a brand new record frame with plexiglas front. The matching Los Angeles record is in VG condition...with gorgeous near-mint labels. There are several noticable scratches/scuffs on the vinyl but it playgrades without incident. It is absolutely the appropriate matching Los Angeles package...disc, cover, and inner sleeve (this auction additionally includes the original Los Angeles "goldenrod orange" inner sleeve). The record is Spizer-cataloged as CAP 2553.MR1B. I have made every effort to provide the winner of this auction the 100% complete and totally correct "Butcher package" as it was experienced exactly 40 years ago.
