Beatlesongs was a 1982 compilation album released by Rhino Records, containing novelty songs and parodies of the music of the Beatles. The original cover caused a controversy because the cover featured a caricature of Mark David Chapman, the man who murdered John Lennon less than two years earlier. Chapman is pictured on the far left of the cover holding the end of the banner.
Rhino claims they did not know that William Stout included Mark David Chapman on the cover and when they started to receive calls and letters about the cover, they recalled it and replaced it with another cover.
MY OPINION
Here is what I think happened. Rhino Records knew all along that this would be a controversial cover. What better way to sell records than to tell people that the album is being pulled and the distasteful cover is being destoryed. So they released the LP and waited for the news to break... and it did. It made national news. Now you rarely see the replacement cover on ebay, but there are tons of the original Mark David Chapman covers. Right Now this is the ONLY replacement cover on eBay!! So exactly how many replacement covers were made?... my guess 200 or less. If I'm right.. the replacement cover is up there with the rarest of Beatles albums.
