The Beatles Sixth Fan-Club Christmas FlexiDisc
The Beatles were the only band in history to provide their fan club's members with a new Christmas record every year. The tradition started in 1963 and continued through to their break-up in 1970. In 1970, the Beatles released, through the fan club, a long-play album that had each year's record on one album. In America, the album was titled The Beatles Christmas Album. The British edition was titled The Beatles Now and Then. These records were not the typical Christmas records one would expect. The Beatles doing “Silent Night", would be too easy, and besides everyone from Elvis on down was doing this. The Beatles would record a Christmas message for their fans. The record would be pressed on a flexi-disk and mailed to the fan club members.
The Sixth Beatles Christmas Record was the first of the Christmas fan club discs to be recorded separately by each Beatle, in November & December, 1968. Released on December 20, it is a collage of odd noises, musical snippets, and individual messages. Paul's song "Happy Christmas, Happy New Year" is featured, along with John's poems "Jock and Yono" and "Once Upon a Pool Table." Also notable is a rendition of "Nowhere Man" by the ukulele-playing Tiny Tim. Also included is a sped-up snippet of the Beatles' own "Helter Skelter" and a brief snippet of Perrey & Kingsley's "Baroque Hoedown" which was used three years later in Disneyland's Main Street Electrical Parade. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and "Birthday" are also heard in the background for part of the message.The dialogue and songs for the flexi-disc were organized and edited together by Kenny Everett.
This auction is for the Beatles Sixth Christmas record, appropriately titled The Beatles Sixth Christmas Record. The flexi and it’s cover are in Near Mint-Mint condition.
