Description

Introducing the Beatles on VJ records.

This description is in three parts. The first part will be about the cover followed by a description of the record and finally a bit about myself. I am included here to possibly help validate this auction item. Sound files of both sides of the record have been added. The recordings are the beginning of the last song on each side of the LP. This is where I find where most of the surface noise collects on old records unless there are other defects. Several large pictures have been included . All questions will be answered quickly and posted on the auction site as it progresses.

The cover passes all the fraud tests from eskimo.com as compiled by Perry Cox, Robert York, Mitch McGeary and Bruce Spizer. These are reproduced below.

Covers with a brown border around the front cover photo are fakes. Covers with a bright yellow tint and the word "STEREO" printed in black at the upper left are fakes. Covers without George Harrison's shadow-visible to his right of where he stands, near the edge are fakes. Covers with red, blue, and yellow dots, unmistakable under the top of the back cover, are fakes. The dots are used by the printers during the printing process. On originals, the dots are in a different area and are not normally visible. (This fake is of particular importance due to the high quality of the front cover photo. For that reason, this cover has fooled many a collector. Look for the dots! Fake covers are almost always accompanied by a fake disc.) Covers for the stereo issue that list Love Me Do and P. S. I Love You, among the two columns of tracks on the back, are almost always fakes. Only a couple of authentic copies of these versions are known to exist. If either the front or the back cover is flat (lacking gloss) it's is a counterfeit.

This version one cover has no seam splitting.

The song titles on the back include Love Me Do on side one and P.S. I Love You on side two. It is not a paste over slick.

There is only the slightest trace of the beginning of ring wear on the front. Very slight wear around the edges and a slight wrinkle on the front. Corners are very sharp and well defined. Very slight wear on the back. Smells nice too!

The Record.

This also passes the fake tests as reproduced below.

Some of the more common characteristics found on COUNTERFEIT DISCS: Any labels with flat textured rainbow/colorband labels are fakes. Labels that have "THE BEATLES" and "INTRODUCING The BEATLES" separated by the center hole are fakes. If the width of the vinyl trail-off -the gap between the end of the last track and the edge of the label is greater than one inch, you have a fake. Any copy with black labels that do not have the rainbow colorband, that are printed on glossy paper stock, are fakes. Copies with rainbow/colorband labels that have faint print and/or weak color brightness and a lack of clarity are fakes

This is a version 2 MR2A bracket label with center justified titles.  It seems plausible that a version two record would be inside a version one cover. Correct me if I am wrong. I have several duplicates and several obvious fakes. I never mixed records that I found with other covers. Each record has a very slight date in the dead wax.  This is the earliest date of all the version two records I have. Trail off is 7/8 of an inch. The matrix in the dead wax is 63-3403-1 and 63-3402-1

Other impressions are hard to read but I can see the following.

1-23-64

A1

URJ

There are other  machine stampings.

The disk plays the songs as listed on the record label but not as listed on the cover. The record plays 'Ask Me Why' and 'Please Please Me'. It has several spindle trails on it but remarkably few few scuffs and scratches. Still has a very nice gloss to it even if you can see slight groove wear near the center of the record.

Goldmine grading applies........Very Good Plus: these records will have very high gloss and be very well care for. It would be obvious that they had been returned to their sleeves after use and may have shown the evidence of being played a few times but not very many. There may be very slight scuffing from the paper sleeve and maybe a few random very light scratches

Side One sound file is here.

Side Two sound file is here.

About Myself

I worked in a music store in the 1970's and 1980's and collected records for several decades along with my rummage and estate sale habit. I have seen my share of fakes, enough to pave the street in front of my house.

I am confident in the item being genuine and the auction will eventually reflect this.

Why are you selling this? I am on the near side of 60 and it has come time for me to sell.

Please take care of this artifact better than I can. Its your responsibility now......

Please ask any questions. The auction will be updated as it goes on.

On Apr-26-12 at 16:48:09 PDT, seller added the following information:

This cover has the two 1/4 inch fold over flaps inside the record cover. It seems that it should actually have the oval label or the left justified bracket style record label but the only disks I own like that have dates of 1964 in the dead wax. This record has the date 1-23-63 which is about a week after VJ was issued a restraining order preventing them from printing materials that included "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" and about two weeks after it was first released. Any info on this is greatly appreciated and will be included on the auction site.

Oops...correction to the above statement. This record has a date of 1-23-64 and all the other disks I have that are bracket left justified are later in 1964
