Description

For sale is one of the rarest Japanese Beatle items out there - the original 1986 mono record box containing 10 albums which were pressed and released in limited numbers that year to commemorate the 20th anniversary since The Beatles first (and only) concerts in Japan in 1966. The LPs in this set are renown for the high quality of mastering and their superior sound when compared with the standard stereo mixes.

These records are individually hard to find, as only about 10,000 were pressed for each of the albums. Collectively, it's quite difficult to find a complete set like this for sale. What makes these especially rare is that they come in this original record box of which only 1,000 were produced, most likely for promotional purposes. The box, with its "screaming fans" cover, was produced exclusively for this set by Toshiba-EMI (you can see their logo on the back), and the design was never used again. Moreover, according to Jason Anjoorian's "The Beatles Japanese Record Guide", most of these box sets were broken up by record sellers at the time so that the albums could be sold individually, making the full set including the box near impossible to find today.

I bought this set 10 years ago after seeing it one day in a record shop in Tokyo. It was quite a lucky find for me as a collector, and I've stored the records carefully ever since then without ever playing them. The LPs themselves are in top condition - none of them have any scratches, blemishes, scuffs or other surface imperfections of any kind. I'd rate them all as Mint or, at the very least, solid Near Mint+. The record covers are all in nice condition and all fit comfortably somewhere between Near Mint and Mint. They all come with their original inserts which include a history of the album (in Japanese) and lyrics. The only real flaw is in the 'Please Please Me' gatefold paper insert, which for some reason shows some wrinkling and slight age discoloration. All the other inserts are fine. 'The Beatles' white album includes the additional posters, which are unused. All records also come with their original red 'obis'.

The box itself shows some noticeable wear, especially on the edges. The front and back faces of the box are quite nice, though, and mostly free of wear.

Note that because of the limited nature (only 1,000 made) and its promotional status, the box itself was never issued with an obi.

Next month marks the 20th anniversary of when this box set was made - a set itself celebrating 20 years since the Beatles' arrival in Japan. It is a very special item and I hate to part with it, but alas I must. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Records in the set:

Please Please Me, With the Beatles, Hard Days Night, Help!, Beatles for Sale, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, The Beatles (white album), Yellow Submarine
