“JOLLY WHAT! THE BEATLES & FRANK IFIELD ON STAGE” LP by The Beatles & Frank Ifield
-
This LP is Vee Jay Records VJLP 1085.
-
This LP was released in February of 1964.
-
The LP (cover and vinyl) in this auction is the REAL THING, for sure!. It is NOT A COUNTERFEIT because:
-
The cover has excellent print quality without blurred letters or images.
-
The cover has the spine printing: “JOLLY WHAT! THE BEATLES & FRANK IFIELD” and “VJLP 1085”.
-
The vinyl has the Monarch Records logo (MR in a circle) stamped in the trail off of both sides.
-
-
The record in this auction has BLACK LABELS with PERIMETER COLOR BAND and VEE JAY OVAL LOGO. Vee Jay Records issued this LP with three different label variations: A) BLACK LABELS with PERIMETER COLOR BAND and VEE JAY OVAL LOGO, B) BLACK LABELS with PERIMETER COLOR BAND and VEE JAY BRACKETS LOGO, and C) BLACK LABELS with VJ LOGO & TEXT in SILVER PRINT. According to Cox and Daniels, “all of the mono label variations were most likely issued at the same time” (February, 1964).
-
From my experience, I most often find this LP with the VJ brackets logo or the all-black label with silver print. I tend to find this LP with the VJ Oval Logo, like the LP in this auction, much less often. So, from my experience, this seems to be one of the less-common Vee Jay label/vinyl issues of this LP title.

As you probably know, Vee Jay Records, for a short period of time in 1963-1964, held the U.S. rights to a handful of Beatles’ songs that the record company recycled several times by selling the same vinyl recordings in different covers. The buying public quickly realized that they were not acquiring any new Beatles’ material in each Vee Jay album they purchased. Instead, they were buying basically the same Beatles’ tunes over and over when they purchased the following VJ LPs: “Introducing the Beatles”, “Songs, Pictures & Stories of the Fabulous Beatles” and the Beatles’ disk of “The Beatles vs The Four Seasons” 2-record set.
-
With the issue of this LP, Vee Jay Records carried their misrepresentation of their Beatles’ material to a new level by stating on the cover “ON STAGE” which naturally implied to the crazed teenage Beatlemanic of 1964 (average Beatles LP-buyer) that this LP contained LIVE recordings from The Beatles and Frank Ifield concerts… which, of course, it didn’t!!!
-
This LP contains the following Beatles’ tunes: “Please Please Me”, “From Me To You”, “Ask Me Why”, and “Thank You Girl”.
-
The rear cover states that The Beatles and Frank Ifield were combined on this LP as they “are the most popular recording stars in Europe” (of course, at that time).

The COVER is in NICE VG+ CONDITION. The front cover image and printing is nice and clean with very little and veryl ight wear and has nicely retained its original purple, red and blue colors. There is a green plastic sticker with the initials “T.R.” made by a P-Touch 3 label-maker attached/stuck on the cover at the upper left corner of the front cover. This green plastic sticker has a small corner crease where perhaps someone tried to remove it but then decided against it, as it could perhaps result in damage to the cover. An original price sticker from a “Rike’s” store is at the upper right corner. There is very light wear on the seams, spine and the 2 corners at the opening. The other 2 corners, at the top and bottom of the spine, have moderate wear with a little bit of “balding” on those two corners. THERE ARE NO SEAM SPLITS, NO CRACKING and NO FLAKING ON THE SEAMS or SPINE. It’s one of the nicest covers that I’ve seen of this “Jolly What!” LP, and you know how this dark purple cover is prone to easily develop and show even the slightest bit of wear.
The primarily white rear cover is CLEAN AND WHITE and shows practically no wear aside from a bit of light wear at the lower edge of the opening.

The VINYL is in VERY STRONG VG CONDITION with a number of very light surface hairlines/scuffs. There are NO “feelable” scratches/scuffs. There is a scuff visible in the image of the Side 1 disc on track 1 and part of track 2, but it is really a very light scuff, not feelable and has no effect on the sound/listening experience. (I listened to it on my Technics turntable tracking at ½ gram.) The vinyl has LOTS OF GLOSS!
-
The vinyl comes with its ORIGINAL VEE JAY INNER PAPER SLEEVE that has some original glue stains on one side and a 6-inch split on the bottom.
A VERY NICE VG to VG+ COPY of this UNCOMMON BEATLES VEE JAY LP. Maybe you need a copy of this LP for your vinyl collection?
