Collectors of foreign pressings will be well-familiar with this obscure pressing out of France. The Music for Pleasure budget label reissued a few Beatles solo titles in 1980 throughout some parts of Europe, and this was one of John’s. But while most countries followed the format of using MFP’s more familiar red label (see compere photo), France used their own blue label design.
But even more interesting is that they used the straight transfer text and font layout for their 1973 Apple issue, one of which had the error on the last track, “Meat City.” Collectors in foreign markets are familiar with France’s Apple label text templates from the 70’s that use very wide font for the song titles. Some copies of their first Apple pressing listed the track “Meat City” as “Meat Coty” before it was corrected for subsequent issues.
This impossible copy of the Music for Pleasure issue uses that typeset, text layout and template error from 1973. I bought this copy in 1987, and have never come across another one since.
Time for another serious collector to own it.
Vinyl--- NM/NM. Both sides shine just as it did the day it was pressed.
Plates--- A21/B21. All machine-stamped markings and matrices are from French lathes.
Cover--- VG. Front cover has 100% full gloss and light record outdent. Some tiny digs as well. Back cover has moderately yellowed. Light foxing, mainly by the mouth of the back cover. Small price sticker from a used record store on the back left at the top, NO SPLIT SEAMS.
Labels--- NM/NM. Perfectly clean labels look 1980-freshly printed. NO SPINDLE MARKS.
Original Inner Sleeve--- VG+. Shows very little yellowing from the decades. Each side has a light crease. Each side has a handful of finger divots. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original MFP inner sleeve en route.
If you’re a collector of foreign pressings and have been on the hunt for this one, it’s your keeper! It’s been mine for 46 years.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
